“There is no need for such systems”: In Ukraine, work on the 120-mm Smereka mobile mortar was frozen

The Ukrainian army will be left without a new domestic self-propelled mortar, the Ukrainian Armored Vehicles company froze work on the promising 120-mm Smereka mortar system.

The development of a self-propelled mortar system based on the Varta armored car has been suspended indefinitely. As Vladislav Belbas, the general director of the developer company, explained, work on the Smereka has not been carried out since the beginning of the Russian special operation, no funds are allocated for its development, and the state commission created for testing has been dissolved. In general, no prospects.

On the other hand, he explained, the conflict with Russia showed that the need for mobile mortar systems has disappeared, in a positional war it is better to have 20-30 conventional mortars than one self-propelled one. Mobile complexes are necessary for mobile warfare, when the enemy strikes at each other without engaging in protracted battles. So the freezing of the project did not cause any damage to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The mobile mortar system "Smereka" of 120 mm caliber "Ukrainian armored vehicles" presented in 2020, positioning it as a highly mobile effective means of defeating the enemy. At the end of 2021, it was reported that the mortar was planned to be brought to the testing stage, and then adopted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Mobility and efficiency of firing are the most important conditions for effective combat operations in the context of modern combat against the enemy, when it is necessary to quickly carry out an attack and leave the affected area.

- said the company.

By the way, despite the freezing of the project, in February of this year, Ukraine tried to promote Smereka on the international arms market. The complex was presented at the exhibition of military equipment IDEX-2023 in Abu Dhabi as a "promising development" of the Ukrainian industry.

      - funds for its development are not allocated
In the world, probably, only the lazy one does not develop / modernize them. Here they will definitely find money for the purchase.

Well, not their own, but in debt, and here it is necessary to allocate specific money from a very poor budget.
By the way "Smereka" from the Ukrainian "Yolka" ... they are apparently in contrast to our "flowers"

Well, if it has reliability like that of the Hammer, then if it blows 120 mm, it’s guaranteed to be a kirdyk to the calculation. And maybe something else nearby will take down .....

Quite right, in a positional war it is better to have 20-30 conventional mortars than one self-propelled one. The mortar itself is easier to hide in the bushes than the car on which it fumbles. Hello to managers from Rostec who promote self-propelled phlox and gorse

The Flox self-propelled joint stock company is expected to have a firing range of ready-rifled ammunition of close to 13 km. This is, as it were, seriously further than conventional 120 mm mortars.
And I would like to see the 82-mm "Drok" almost like a wheeled tank, with the ability to fire directly, but this turned out not to be the case.

Alex, how do you write and the mortar crew will be in the bushes? under fragments of the same 120mm min? yes, ideally, for each barrel with a full-profile trench and a blindhem for calculation and BC, but over time they will completely lose it, but a lightly armored cart with a mortar is the most effective means of supporting infantry, yes, a vein is good, but much more expensive, though the high cost is offset by the automatic loader

Aren't you tired of sucking on joints with the Hammer? Why not switch to the Mi-28 shoals, about which they sang that it had no analogues of the highest rank.
