“There is no need for such systems”: In Ukraine, work on the 120-mm Smereka mobile mortar was frozen
The Ukrainian army will be left without a new domestic self-propelled mortar, the Ukrainian Armored Vehicles company froze work on the promising 120-mm Smereka mortar system.
The development of a self-propelled mortar system based on the Varta armored car has been suspended indefinitely. As Vladislav Belbas, the general director of the developer company, explained, work on the Smereka has not been carried out since the beginning of the Russian special operation, no funds are allocated for its development, and the state commission created for testing has been dissolved. In general, no prospects.
On the other hand, he explained, the conflict with Russia showed that the need for mobile mortar systems has disappeared, in a positional war it is better to have 20-30 conventional mortars than one self-propelled one. Mobile complexes are necessary for mobile warfare, when the enemy strikes at each other without engaging in protracted battles. So the freezing of the project did not cause any damage to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The mobile mortar system "Smereka" of 120 mm caliber "Ukrainian armored vehicles" presented in 2020, positioning it as a highly mobile effective means of defeating the enemy. At the end of 2021, it was reported that the mortar was planned to be brought to the testing stage, and then adopted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
- said the company.
By the way, despite the freezing of the project, in February of this year, Ukraine tried to promote Smereka on the international arms market. The complex was presented at the exhibition of military equipment IDEX-2023 in Abu Dhabi as a "promising development" of the Ukrainian industry.
