"For fighters at sea, land and in the air": the United States has developed a powerful small-sized laser system

The American company Northrop Grumman demonstrated its new development, commissioned by the US government - a powerful small-sized laser system, designated Phantom.

As indicated on the corporation's website, the laser power is 10 kW. The plant generating it is placed in a case with a capacity of about 339 liters, and its dimensions are close to a small refrigerator. The entire system weighs less than 90 kg, allowing it to be carried by two soldiers.

The developer explained that the new product, which is compact, lightweight and efficient, was created in the interests of a military customer:

High-energy laser solutions are designed for the fighters who defend our country at sea, on land and in the air.

In what kind of combat environment the Phantom will be used and against what targets is not explained. It is possible that the American defense industry is trying to develop effective ways to deal with drones, whose role on the battlefield increased significantly during the Ukrainian conflict.

Earlier reports were published about the destruction of the UAV by laser weapons. So, in 2019, Turkey announced the defeat in Libya in combat conditions of a large-sized (weight 4,2 tons) Chinese-made Wing Loong II strike and reconnaissance drone from a laser system with a gun power of 50 kW mounted on an armored car chassis.

In a cube 70x70x70 cm and weighing only 90 kg with a filling density 3.7 times less than the density of water, they managed to stick a laser with a cooling system and a "battery"?

but does have the advantage of filling only 12 ft³ (~0.3 m³) and weighing less than 200 lb (90 kg), making it light and compact enough for two people to lift and install
      - this is the device itself (emitter), there are a lot of extras to it. equipment included)

Over the past two years, the myth of many miracle inventions of the West has already been debunked on the battlefield. And it all started with the Javelins, even children were called that in Kyiv...

We, too, should not lag behind in the development and adoption of combat laser systems of various capacities and purposes, these are advanced military technologies and the future lies with them.

    The plant that generates it

But from this place, please in more detail.
What did they put in there, and how many shots does it take?

Targeting problem, huh? Waving a beam in the air - hoping to hit?

Typically, such lasers are connected to the FCS: radar-afar + computer.
The problem has always been not in the guidance system, but in the power of the laser.

-well, yes, yes .... they are in a box 90kg weight and calculation from 2 soldiers must also radar shove.
talk about PORTABLE(!!!!!!!!!!) laser - we are not talking about a tank or a car. There you can easily cram both the LMS and Afar and the computers

With such an aperture, a radiated power of 10 kW would require holding the beam on the target for several seconds to achieve anything. For UAVs, this also requires the creation of a highly accurate beam stabilization system. The device is useful only to frighten savages. In addition, with an efficiency of 10-20%, you will have to carry a 100 kW generator with you.
Other developments up to 200 kW are known. Even they have not yet found application. Not scary.

The laser power is 10 kW, the output pulse power is not more than 4 kW, what and at what height will this laser destroy?

Israel also connected lasers to the Iron Dome missile defense system.
Comp decides whether it is better to shoot: a laser or a rocket.
SUO Zh.K. changed to take into account the emergence of a variety of drones.

"... its dimensions are close to a small refrigerator. The entire system weighs less than 90 kg, which allows two soldiers to carry it." - well, they say the AGS is hard to carry. And then two Negroes "refrigerator" (taking into account that this is only part of the equipment) is transported to the lungs over rough terrain, well done, prepared.

The body is clearly designed to be carried by four, although two can lift it.

About ten years ago, the Americans tried to place a 30 kW laser on a large Boeing. But for some reason, the topic turned off. As far as we know, long-range laser weapons have difficulty focusing the beam. Very serious optics are required, plus accurate focusing equipment, depending on the firing distance.

UAVs were also ridiculed not long ago. And they are even lagging behind Iran in this area. Now we are puffing and catching up. The Amer have been testing and already adopting laser systems for a long time. development data.

The laser power of 10 kW is very small. To hit the target, you need to fix it on it for a certain time. And nothing is known about the guidance system
