Rapid Crossbow

I usually write about manual gunshot weapon, but in this article I will slightly change the specialization and try to make the material in a slightly different pattern. It will be a question of throwing weapons, namely a crossbow, but a crossbow with a design that is somewhat different from the already common variants, which has a higher rate of fire, albeit with its own nuances. I was interested in this sample primarily because it has rather compact dimensions during transportation and a relatively easy way to recharge, although this affects the maximum possible stiffness of the shoulders. Well, and besides this, I think that the topic will be quite relevant in the context of the wide use of bows and crossbows by the main movie heroes of foreign fighters. At the same time I will try and dispel a couple of myths about bows and crossbows, as there are quite a few misconceptions about them.

First of all it should be noted that the crossbow weapon is far from being silent, however, it depends on what kind of crossbow it is. In any case, those options that can compete with firearms in their effectiveness, when fired, create a noise level comparable to the slam of the car door when closed, so that, alas, silently do not fire. As well as it does not come out to shoot for many hundreds of meters. Even the most sophisticated samples can not provide the same range of fire that the poorest rifle. In general, samples that are not intended for room shooting can not compete with firearms, as the writers would not like. Although I do not argue that many of the hunting bow crossbows can hit a target no worse than a rifle at relatively short distances, but, to be honest, I wouldn’t have enough spirit to hunt a boar with such a weapon, although it is practiced in those countries where such hunting is allowed.

But let us return to the main topic of the article, namely to a multiply charged crossbow of increased rate of fire. The queue, of course, does not know how to shoot such a weapon, so the sample that Van Helsing has armed the Catholic Church in one of the movies can not be dreamed of, but still an interesting idea in its own way and has clear advantages over other designs. The basis of this crossbow steel turning shoulders. So, for cocking the weapon you need to take one of the shoulders and take it to itself until it stops, so that the string enters the clutch with the trigger shaft, at the same time the hollow drum of the weapon rotates on the surface of which the booms are mounted. After that, already with considerable effort, the crossbow's shoulders return to their original position and a shot can be fired. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of this sample will depend directly on the physical strength of the shooter, since here you can’t pull the string either with your back or weight, but with handles, so that, despite the significantly increasing rate of fire, the effectiveness of such weapons will be very, very small.

Rapid Crossbow

The second feature of this sample is that these same shoulders have the ability to fold. Each shoulder turns in such a way that both shoulders become parallel to each other upward, and after that they simply fit on the base of the crossbow. In addition, the crossbow has a retractable butt butt, which can also be pushed all the way, making the weapon really compact and easy to transport, especially in comparison with the classic crossbows.

Well, actually, the main idea was told, it is possible to sum up some kind of outcome. In general, I personally liked the design of such a crossbow, primarily the originality of the solution to the main problem of this weapon. On the other hand, the low effectiveness of the crossbow due to weak shoulders, increased wear of the bowstring due to friction make it a weapon, adapted only for recreational shooting, well, maybe even for hunting birds, but it is very unlikely that it will be worthwhile. It is also disappointing that in fact such a construction is devoid of further development. However, after some thought, the next thought on modernization came to my mind. And it consists in introducing a separate lever into the crossbow device, for the platoon, which would partially compensate for the force of the cocking due to its length, but the question of implementation and how much compactness will suffer from this remains open. In general, here and so briefly about one of the original ideas for weapons that are already many hundreds of years old.

It is curious, of course, but still it is more for the cinema, and not for practical application ...

The topic of multiply charged crossbows was refined (as usual, with the idea) by the Sinists in the Middle Ages, and they did not work badly.

EMNIP, in the film was a bullet with a gasoline drive. So somewhere in the box there could be a string tensioning mechanism with a separate drive for turning the internal mechanisms of the drum. So, with certain reservations, an automatic crossbow with an external energy source is possible. But I remember the old picture about the trolley of bread loaf and expediency.

From the book of M.V. Gorelik "The Weapons of the Ancient East" M .: "Science" 1993. By the way, the author himself is a graduate of the history department of Moscow State University and enjoys authority in the circle of weapons experts and reenactors, he has consulted not only historical films.
".... It was invented around the middle of the XNUMXst millennium BC in the lands of the originally non-Hua kingdom of Chu, south of the central course of the Yangtze River ...
The pulling force of ancient Chinese crossbows was enormous, 5-10 times higher than the pulling force of bows, and reached, according to the message of Sun Tzu (III century BC), almost 360 kg [Materials. 1968, p.17]. However, there was no mechanism for tensioning the crossbow in China, and they pulled it with two hands, lying on their back and resting both feet on the onion. while holding the arrow in my teeth "
By the way, you can watch the film, in one of the translations it was called "The Emperor and the Assassin", the legend is based on the real events of the history of repeated attempts on the life of Qin Shi Huang (posthumous Qin Shi Huang-di) who died in 228 BC. and known for its unsurpassed necropolis not only in size but also in usability.
Now, with regards to the miracle itself, it wasn’t the only multi-shot one, there were also very old ones who might be interested in looking at RobinGood more fully, archers and arbalester are gathering there, and thanks to the author, I just wanted to see something like that in VO, as for the perversions like shooting with a ramrod from AK and more accessible from PPR, at least my boss captain shot titanium at the brickwork, though he spoke quite a bit from an old-style gun !!!

Thanks for the historical background, found the book, you must read. In general, I think that it is impossible to speak with complete certainty about such things, firstly, it was long ago, and secondly, where is the guarantee that the documented confirmation of the use of the crossbow means that the first crossbow was invented there. And then, the tension force around 360 kilo from the first crossbows, but where did their predecessors go in the form of ordinary bows fixed on some basis with the simplest trigger mechanism? After all, they had to be, or immediately, like this, they took and screamed up the mega-shooter, which you are going to fight lying on the fig? So no, I am skeptical about such information.

Well, there is one point, more precisely a few
          1! possible synchronization of inventions
2 They don’t really talk about this, but there is historical evidence that much that we consider to be the product of the Hellenes was incorporated by them from Asia Minor, at least take the cult of Bacchus-Bacchus, olives, pomegranates and much more
3 From the above excerpts, the conclusion that YOU made, where you shared more than 200 years, does not follow at all.
By the way, the material is quite dry there are more interesting tables and a list of references, I hope that you have found a complete academic version, by the way, M.V. Gorelik originally had an idea of two books, like war chariots and something else in the same spirit should have been considered, but it didn’t seem to come out at least in "Science" or I didn’t search hard enough.

Interestingly, did this specialist from Moscow State University try the method described by him to pull this kind of crossbow with a tension of 360 kg? I would really like to see it. Most likely, such specialists were heavier than a ballpoint pen and did not hold anything. Or the Chinese at that time were all as one to pick strongmen laughing

Actually, you need to read carefully, the source is indicated there in black and white. this is the first, secondly, if you were pulling iron, you would probably know that the main thing is to pass a certain critical point or "start" "above it, I will not go far for examples, on my personal (by no means a strong man). weight 65 with a classic grip "from below" on the biceps (a barbell with a regular bar) took 58kg without "cheating", with a cheat of 63-64kg, when lowering if the bend angle beyond 80 did not come with difficulty, but still without cheating and brought back. I know people who pulled the deadweight in 300kg, because that was our director, at one time a rugby player!

A good alternative to throwing spears. I wonder why in the ancient era they still preferred darts. And this engraving is also clearly from the era of firearms.
“In the II century BC (and according to other sources as early as the IV century BC), crossbows were independently invented in China.
Thus, crossbows have a very ancient history. However, the fate of this invention turned out to be very difficult. In China, the crossbow, having played a significant role in the fight against opponents during the Han dynasty, was later forgotten, which allowed it to be reinvented with great fanfare in the XNUMXth century. Cool happened. It’s the same as if we had invented an automatic rifle with us, then forgot something somehow, started using arquebuses and muskets, and then again invented after 1300 years. Sorry, could not resist a retreat from the topic

A toy is a toy, but from a crossbow it is possible: to set fire to something, send news to a protected area, eliminate an individual, deliver the other end of the halyard (rope) to its destination ... well, and much more.
Therefore, I would not belittle the possibilities of this type of weapon. It’s just peculiar.

At the beginning, the engine for cocking the aunt, electric or gasoline, then for each arrow along the rocket engine, we reduce the arrow and put it in the tube ... So the crossbow turns, turns ... well, you know.

A kind of weapon, but taking into account the appearance of low-noise and flameless small arms, this is history. Although, as noted here, in some specific cases, the crossbow can be used in special operations. And so in general in case of the apocalypse. Thanks to the author for an interesting article.

why not use gears? double-action mechanism: twist the handle like a spinning rod, and we have a bowstring stretched, and the drum rotates. just what for?
