“Allows you to deliver surgically precise strikes”: the Western press compared the Lancet UAV with the American Switchblade-600

Mass application drones- the kamikaze "Lancet" leads to significant losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in combat equipment, in particular the towed fleet suffers artillery and self-propelled guns of Western origin. Despite the silence on the problems in the Ukrainian army, the Western press could not ignore this fact.

The Lancet has been in use since the beginning of the conflict and has evolved from weapons for delivering local strikes to a means to disrupt the enemy’s counteroffensive

- indicated in the publication Army Recognition.

According to the author, during the summer of 2022 drones began to be used much more often, and by the autumn the peak of their combat activity had been reached. As noted, the UAV has a unique design called "Double X" ("Double Cross"):

The main feature of the Lancet is its ability to maneuver, which allows it to deliver surgically accurate strikes, explaining the name of the drone.

The author believes that the maneuverability of the UAV is due to its non-standard aerodynamic configuration, called "Double X" ("Double Cross"), "which most of the modern kamikaze drones do not have."

This is a longitudinal biplane with two X-shaped planes. This design allows the UAV to dive at high speeds, "delivering" a heavy payload to the target.

- explained in the publication.

According to the author, the Lancet is sometimes compared with the American Switchblade-600, but the latter does not have the function of hitting enemy UAVs, and a special transport and launch container is needed to launch them into the air (for the Russian analogue, a conventional catapult is enough), which makes it difficult to use them in conditions of intense combat

In its latest modification, the Lancet-3 is equipped with improved optics, and the presence of a thermal imager allows the drone to work around the clock, it does not require satellite navigation and is able to independently conduct reconnaissance and attack targets.

Due to the increased power of the warhead compared to previous modifications, the Lancet-3 has become more deadly

- indicated in the publication.

According to the author, within the framework of the special operation, the RF Armed Forces can use up to 1,5 thousand UAVs in various versions, which gives them the ability to hit any targets, from Buk air defense systems to American M777 guns and Polish 155-mm Krab self-propelled howitzers and warehouses with ammunition for them.

Ukrainians still have not been able to copy the Russian tactics of using Lancet ammunition

- the author writes.

As he explains, in October 2022, the Ukrainian Armed Forces urgently requested another 1,1 Phoenix Ghost kamikaze UAVs from the United States, although Washington had previously transferred 700 drones of this type to the Kyiv regime, but they were mainly used for reconnaissance, rather than striking Russian positions. According to the author, this may most likely be due to the deployment of the systems EW "Krasukha" that suppresses drone control channels.

Currently, the Ukrainian army has also been unable to find countermeasures against Lancet ammunition due to their noiselessness and lack of a thermal signature, which makes visual and radar detection impossible, allowing them to destroy targets where the enemy does not expect it.

- the author concludes.

I can't understand why it is so difficult to install a warhead from the Kh-MD-E and Kh-50 air-launched missiles (not to be confused with the Kh-50 cruise missile), created for use from drones, on the Lancet. The warhead there weighs exactly 20 kg - 30 kg.

From the characteristics of the Kh-MD-E missile, it is known that its launch weight is 110 kg, the maximum launch range is up to 40 km. The missile is equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead weighing 30 kg, which allows guaranteed destruction of both enemy tanks, artillery positions, and fortified objects.

Because it will be a completely different drone. The lancet does not carry air, its warhead is something that can be crammed into this design with the given parameters of the seeker, range, speed and loitering time .. Look at the example of Israeli kamikaze drones: there are options with any mass of warheads to your taste , but it's all implemented in completely different designs.

Well, this is no longer a claim to the Lancet, but to the expansion of the range of products (which means, first of all, the issue of ordering). It is impossible to put warheads of 20-30 kg on the Lancet.

                  This is yes.
The design seems to be successful.
But the Lancet-3, with a warhead of up to 5 kg, already weighs 12 kg
How much the catapult weighs - I didn’t find it anywhere, but obviously no less than the Lancet.
That is, you can increase the ammunition to somewhere up to 20 kg, the Lancet itself will weigh somewhere around 50 kg, and this, perhaps, is the maximum mass for a battlefield UAV. The fighter simply won’t take it anymore.
And although a 20 kg tank will not destroy it, it will damage it thoroughly. All sensors, optics, a machine gun, a cannon - they are not covered by armor. And 20 kg is enough for them.
The tank will only have to drape, since it will have nothing to fight with.
And more than 20 kg warhead is already a completely different UAV, it will have to be launched from a special launcher. On the basis of "Kamaz", for example.

Well, yes, the tank is like a racing car, like a Ferrari, moreover, off-road and the kamikaze drone will not have time to fly behind it. There are videos on the Internet of how Western self-propelled guns in the NVO zone tried to leave Lancet-3 at full speed, and they always did it poorly.

Don't fool me, I've seen Kumami work in combat.
Efficiency is inversely proportional to the angle of impact up to the ricochet threshold. A warhead designed to penetrate 500mm will penetrate 250mm at an angle of 45 degrees.
And "a certain place" - fairy tales for noobs, 80% of the upper projection of the BMP-1/2/3 and old Soviet tanks - one continuous weak spot, hit wherever you want, best in the center of the tower.

Not a single army could find countermeasures against kamikaze, or rather, to build an air defense system with a long front line. The thing is that they (it happened) maximally embodied the whole essence of Stealth technology. And the existing air defense systems can actually resist them only at close range (at a distance of visual damage). As an exception, but in essence confirming this statement, is our Khmeimim base in Syria. There, at one point, a huge number of different air defense systems are deployed to create a layered defense. And they cope with the task of hitting UAVs. But it is impossible to deploy such a fortified area along the entire front line in order to create a continuous continuous air defense line.

Before the Ukrainian conflict, the Americans did not particularly deal with the topic of kamikaze drones. They went into large and heavy UAVs. The closest analogue of the Lancet is the Israeli "mini Harpy", but it slightly surpasses it in all respects (warhead mass, range, barrage time). It was Israeli kamikazes that were used in the second Karabakh war and are in service with the Chinese Army.

The base is not the front line. It is possible to organize point defense of an object, Israel has covered entire cities.
To cover the entire front line, you need something like a mobile LCD, the only system today that can intercept targets in dozens, the LCD radar allows up to several hundred in a salvo, the only question is the number of connected launchers.
Kyiv is why the LCD is begging so much, the system is able to reduce the effectiveness of rear strikes by drones and CD by 90-95%, with skillful use. But they do not understand that the system itself needs a full echelon of medium and long-range missiles for its own cover, from the same Iskander, for example. She may hit him, but she is unlikely to be able to knock him off course, the warheads in the interceptors are too small, there is no direct physical hit in the LCD missiles, and there are too many kinetics in the Iskander itself. Against this, Stanners and an Arrow are already needed - 2/3.
But there are still Daggers, and Strela-4, which is being created to intercept hypersonic missiles, is still at the testing stage.
Such deliveries will bring nothing but anti-advertising, apart from an unnecessary diplomatic scandal with the Russian Federation, and therefore they are not given them.

Of course, now I’ll rake the dashes ... well, rightly so ... I’m not used to it.
Reading many comments, the feeling is that I passed by grannies on a bench at the entrance in my distant youth ...
We don't have design engineers. Long gone. Died out in the 90s.
And a design engineer would have made a tandem long ago.
A drone that takes off from the ground and carries a kind of lancet-tweezers with it. Having flown a certain considerable distance, hidden from enemy air defense, the mother releases the child to hunt. Which no longer needs to fly far, accordingly, most of the drone is occupied by an enlarged munition, which is landed at the desired point. And the mother drone calmly returns home. For the next mission. How trivial? And for a long time in real life... drones with guided homing missiles... such a Karabakh-Barabakh...
By the way, apparently the lancet probably does not work alone, another drone duplicates it from above, which possibly provides it with communication. He is high, and the radio horizon is pushed back for him. But this is just a guess.
