“Mi-28NE turned the tide of the fight”: the Uganda Air Force appreciated Russian helicopters in battles with rebels
24
Since 2008, Uganda has been fighting rebels from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). This is a sectarian organization, the core of which are Acholi fighters. She is notorious for capturing children and then recruiting them into her ranks. In 2011, American troops tried to crush the LRA to no avail. Real progress in the fight against militants began to occur only recently thanks to the supply of Russian rotorcraft.
There is no doubt that the appearance of attack helicopters [Mi-28NE] on the battlefield turned the tide of the struggle in the north of the country against the LRA. With the acquisition of new machines, we are ready to serve our country at a qualitatively new level.
- the commander of the Air Force, Lieutenant General Charles Okidi, appreciated the new equipment, whose words are quoted by Defense Web (South Africa).
According to Western analysts, Uganda acquired 6 Mi-28NE (export version of the Night Hunter) in 2020. All ordered vehicles were delivered in three batches in 2022. They were personally examined by President Yoweri Museveni on the eve of the start of a military operation against rebels in Congo. The service center at the Nakosongola airbase is used to service the Mi-28. It also modernizes the Mi-24, also in service with the Ugandan Air Force.
