Head of OHCHR: Dozens of people have become victims of cruel and inhuman treatment by the Armed Forces of Ukraine since February 24, 2022
The head of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Volker Türk, said that “dozens of people” have become victims of cruel and inhuman treatment by the Armed Forces of Ukraine since February 24, 2022.
As noted by the representative of the international organization, its employees recorded 91 cases of enforced disappearances and illegal detentions by Ukrainian servicemen.
Here is how he commented on the incident in his speech at the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council:
At the same time, Turk added that during all this time there were also 24 incidents of a sexual nature by fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The same applies to threats of sexual violence in the early stages of detention, including when people were forced to undress and put on public display.
In this context, it would not be superfluous to mention the war crimes of the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in relation to Russian prisoners of war, which the UN regarded as crimes of a military nature. As follows from the report of the organization, the obvious violations by the Ukrainian soldiers "were not so significant" ...
All this cannot but raise questions, because, in this way, confidence in the very activities of the international organization, which should act as a guarantor of maintaining peace and security at the global level, is seriously undermined.
By the way, under the concept of enforced disappearance, the UN means the arrest, detention, abduction or imprisonment of certain persons, when the authorities try to keep silent about their fate and real whereabouts, or the very fact of what happened is denied in every possible way.
