Philippine President: Our country intends to sever all contact with the ICC
Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., in an interview for an American newspaper, said that his country intends to cut off all contact with the International Criminal Court (ICC). As the head of the Philippine state specified, the reason for this was the refusal of the international body of criminal justice to further investigate cases related to the fight against drug trafficking, which were initiated by the previous government.
Here is how the Philippine leader reacted to what is happening:
The Philippine government refuses to cooperate with the court, as issues related to its jurisdiction are of extreme concern to the authorities. In addition, they believe that he interferes in the internal affairs of the state, creating a threat to the security and sovereignty of the country, which is also unacceptable.
Recall that the reason for the termination of cooperation with the ICC was the rejection by the court of an appeal regarding the suspension of the investigation against the ex-leader of the country, Rodrigo Duterte, who was conducting a tough campaign to combat drug trafficking. The court motivated its refusal by the inability of the Philippines to provide convincing evidence for its suspension.
By the way, during his reign from 2016 to 2022, about several thousand traffickers and drug users were shot dead in the Philippines.
However, in East Asia, they believe that the decision of the Philippine authorities is associated with these reasons only formally. The last straw, as expected, was the ICC warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This decision set a precedent that actually violates international law in terms of the immunity of incumbent heads of state, given that an international court, by definition, must be guided by the letter of international law.
