Germany handed over to Ukraine 18 tanks Leopard 2A6, four more than previously agreed. This was announced by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
In a comment to the German press, Pistorius added that along with military equipment, the necessary ammunition and spare parts were delivered to Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also confirmed the shipment of 18 German Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine. In addition to tanks, the Ukrainian army received 40 units of the German Marder infantry fighting vehicles. In addition, the German authorities intend to supply Ukraine with a number of Leopard 1 tanks in service with the Bundeswehr.
Leopard 2 is the main battle tank of the German army. This combat vehicle is equipped with radiation, chemical and biological protection systems, as well as an automatic fire extinguishing system. The armament of this tank is represented by a 120 mm Rheinmetall RH-M-120 smoothbore gun and an arsenal of 42 ammunition for the main gun. The combat vehicle is also equipped with additional weapons, represented by two machine guns, one of which is paired with the main gun, and the second is anti-aircraft and is mounted on the top of the tank roof.
The decision to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to the Kiev regime, as well as permission for other countries to re-export their German-made military equipment, was made by the German authorities in January of this year after pressure exerted on Berlin by allies in the NATO military bloc.
