NATO Secretary General says that Finland will become a member of the alliance before the presidential elections in Turkey
Finland will become a member of the NATO military bloc until May 14 - the date on which the presidential elections in Turkey are scheduled. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
According to Stoltenberg, he received assurances that the Hungarian parliament would ratify the protocol providing for Finland's entry into the alliance in the near future. The NATO Secretary General is also confident that the Turkish parliamentarians will do this before the upcoming presidential elections in the country. Based on this, Stoltenberg expects that Finland will become the next member of the NATO bloc before the presidential elections are held in Turkey.
As for Sweden, whose entry into NATO, according to Stoltenberg, is a priority, the Secretary General of the military bloc could not name any specific dates.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that the vote in the parliament of the republic, which will consider a document providing for the ratification of Finland's membership in NATO, may take place before the date of the country's presidential elections, scheduled for May 14.
According to the Turkish President, the Finnish authorities have taken a number of "sincere and concrete steps" aimed at addressing the security concerns of the Turkish authorities. According to Erdogan, Turkey supports the open door policy declared by the NATO leadership.
Thus, the Turkish government intends to approve Finland's application for NATO membership separately from Sweden before the presidential elections.
