The Russian side will suspend its participation in the “grain deal” if sanctions are not lifted on Russian agricultural exports
The Russian side intends to suspend its participation in the "grain deal" from May 18 if the conditions that take into account Russian interests are not met, in particular regarding the lifting of sanctions imposed by the West on Russian agricultural exports.
In a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, it is said that the Russian government has decided to reduce the period for the next prolongation of the deal by up to 60 days, that is, until May 18. Provided that there is no progress in the implementation of the Russian part of the deal, Russia's participation in it will be suspended. The corresponding position of the Russian government was officially communicated to the UN, as well as the Turkish and Ukrainian sides.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also stressed that, contrary to the initial statements of the parties to the "grain deal", only 3% of the grain exported from Ukraine was delivered to the starving countries of Africa. In the event of withdrawal from the "grain deal" Russia will supply grain to Africa for free. This statement was made against the backdrop of the Russia-Africa Forum taking place in Moscow.
In March this year, Russia extended the "grain deal", but not for 120 days, as expected, but only for 60 days. The term of the agreement, concluded earlier, expired on March 18.
For its part, Russia has fully fulfilled its obligations under the agreement concluded in July last year, which provides for the export of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products through the Black Sea seaports, including Odessa. Despite this, the UN promises regarding the lifting of restrictions on the export of Russian agricultural products have not been fulfilled.
Now the authorities of the country declare that the deal will not be extended again if the operation of the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline is not restored by May 18, the connection of Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system is returned, supplies of agricultural machinery and spare parts for it are restored under previously concluded contracts, accounts are unblocked of Russian companies involved in the export of food, the bans on insurance of Russian fertilizers and agricultural products have been lifted, the bans on the entry of Russian ships with agricultural cargo into a number of world ports have been lifted.
