In the first round of presidential elections in Montenegro, the current head of state loses ground
Based on the processing of 90 percent of the ballots, the head of the socialists, Milo Djukanovic, who has actually led the country since 1991, with short breaks, is in the lead in the presidential elections held in Montenegro - he received 35,40 percent of the vote. In second place was the former Economy Minister Yakov Milatovich, for whom 29,20 percent of voters cast their votes. Andriy Mandic, one of the leaders of the Democratic Front bloc and chairman of the New Serbian Democracy party, rounded out the top three with 19,10 percent of the vote.
Democratic nominee Alexa Becic scored 11,00 percent. Dragina Vuksanović-Stanković (SDP) received 3,20 percent of the vote. Former Interior Minister Goran Danilovic received the support of 1,30 percent of voters. The candidacy of the Serbian writer Jovan Radulovic was supported by only 0,80 percent of citizens.
As can be seen, none of the candidates had enough votes to overcome the 50% threshold necessary for victory. The second stage of the elections will take place, in which, based on the results, Milo Djukanovic and Jakov Milatovic will take part. The second stage is scheduled for April 2 this year.
Djukanovic's result, however, is significantly lower than in the 2018 elections, when he won the support of more than 53 percent of voters in the first round.
The President of Montenegro is elected by popular vote for a five-year term. According to the law, he cannot hold this position for more than two consecutive terms. According to the constitution, Montenegro is a country with a parliamentary form of government, and the president has mainly representative powers. However, the president forms the government of the country and nominates the prime minister.
