Former US Secretary of State: Restoration of relations between Tehran and Riyadh changes the balance of power in the international arena
Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said in an interview with The Washington Post that the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia could change the balance of power in the international arena.
Here is what the diplomat had to say about it:
At the same time, the international relations expert noted that it was thanks to the efforts of Beijing, which acted as a mediator in the negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh, that the two countries were able to restore their diplomatic relations after many years of confrontation.
Moreover, according to the author of the publication, journalist David Ignaces, the current situation in the countries of the Middle East clearly demonstrates a serious weakening of the US position in this region, which is already gradually ceasing to play the role of an “irreplaceable power” for the states of the Arab world.
During the talks between the delegations of the two Middle Eastern countries, which took place in the period from March 6 to 10 in Beijing, the parties agreed not to go to war with each other, and also to prevent intelligence activities against each other. Iran was represented at the talks by Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, and Saudi Arabia by National Security Adviser Musaid al-Ayban.
Recall that diplomatic relations were interrupted between the above states back in 2016, however, during the conversation, Tehran and Riyadh decided to return to compliance with a number of economic agreements signed 20 years ago, which was confirmed not only by the foreign ministries of both countries, but also Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.
