Alleys of Moscow. Shall we turn to Romanov? - On Granovsky!

Sheremetyevo frame

The passion for renaming is incurable, apparently, because being noted in stories literally everyone wants. At one time, the name of the famous historian Granovsky was given to the former Romanov Lane, which, by the way, was called differently.

But let's pay tribute to the boyar Nikita Ivanovich Romanov - he lived here in the middle of the XNUMXth century. He was a cousin of the grandfather of Peter I, Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, and it was from him, a lover of river walks, that his great-nephew got the famous “boat of Peter the Great”.

The lane was both Nikitsky, then Khitrov, and already on it the architect Bazhenov built a classic mansion for Count Razumovsky. Soon all the lands near the Kremlin passed to the Sheremetevs, along with the alley from Vozdvizhenka to Bolshaya Nikitskaya, which was considered the Sheremetev yard.

And only then it was recognized as a passable lane, and it bore its noble name before the revolution, which is also noted on the maps in the Atlas of the Tourist - rather late, 1989 release. The Sheremetyevs put in order the baroque church of the end of the XNUMXth century, which is still called the temple of the icon of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos in Sheremetev yard.

They also completed the Bazhenov mansion. In Komarovo, near St. Petersburg, the Sheremetyevsky longboat is nothing more than a song fantasy, but near the Kremlin, this rich, almost like the Romanovs, family was noted thoroughly. However, the Razumovsky-Sheremetyev mansion, the main one in the Sheremetyevsky frame, and in fact a real palace, is now not visible from the facade.

By the beginning of the XNUMXth century, it had become very dilapidated and was carefully hidden by a capital apartment building with the Peterhof Grand Hotel. After the Civil War, this building on the corner of Vozdvizhenka and Mokhovaya became essentially an office building - it was given over to the reception of workers, soldiers and peasants' deputies, as well as trade union functionaries.

In it, among other things, was the legendary reception room of Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin, the long-term chairman of the All-Union Central Executive Committee, nicknamed the all-Union headman. It is interesting that now a completely democratic cafe has settled almost in the same place, on the ground floor. This is a favorite place for student hangouts for several faculties of Moscow State University at once, including the Faculty of Journalism.

A year and a half ago, you could have a bite to eat there, keeping within three or four hundred rubles, and a glass of quite good Chilean cracker cost 200-250. For several years, part of the first and second floors on Vozdvizhenka opposite the Lenin Library was occupied by the Respublika bookstore, which is open around the clock and therefore even more popular, especially with students.

The student does not sink, the student swims

Alas, this store with a music department and a cafe, like the entire Respublika chain, did not survive the pandemic and the associated demand crisis. It is strange, but, as if to replace it, almost immediately these days another bookstore began to work, which has both more expensive goods and a pretentious name - "Dostoevsky".

There, as, indeed, in Romanov Lane itself, students are not very drawn to, especially since the coffee house in Dostoevsky is not only not cheap, but also cut off from books. And if we are talking about Moscow State University, and at the same time about the readers of Leninka, now half empty, one cannot help but recall a couple of courtyards between Mokhovaya and Romanov with entrances from the alley.

You can still get into them not only from Romanov Lane, but also from the old university buildings, both on business and just to retire and smoke in silence. And no one here was embarrassed by the proximity to the Kremlin hospital (one of the many buildings, of course, not medical, on the corner of Vozdvizhenka) and for a very short time - with a private psychiatric clinic.

They joked about this back in the late 90s, especially since managers replaced psychiatrists. It was under them that the business center "Romanov", and "Romanov-cinema", and a fitness club were erected here. All this functions neither shaky nor rolls, filmmakers are poorly helped even by a commercial university, cunningly called the Faculty of Arts.

It’s just that they are mowing down under Moscow State University, since the church of St. Tatiana is nearby - almost in the same building. When the lane got its oldest name "Romanov" back, they hardly wanted to please the modern descendants of the imperial family. The lane was supposed to become a gastronomic one. And the calculation was clearly made on the sonority of the name and on the local contingent.

And these are not only students and teachers of Moscow State University with their modest incomes, who did not justify the hopes of reenactors, but also the public from the cool departments of the capital's government, as well as residents of elite houses. And about one of them - a separate conversation.

marshal house

It was only later that he was called marshal, when residents from among the first persons of the country moved out of the house or fell under repression. The Sheremetyevs built a lot, and one of their last buildings was the former profitable house of Alexander Dmitrievich, not the most famous representative of the dynasty, at number three along the lane.

A house with lions, whose noses are regularly rubbed for good luck, even today it really adorns the street-lane. At the end of the XNUMXth century, the architect Meissner did his best and, without being carried away by modernity, created a true masterpiece of some kind of Moscow renaissance.

In the green courtyard there is a fountain, which is inaccessible to anyone except the residents. The apartments are not just large, but luxurious, although some of them were ruthlessly compacted in the 20s and 30s, of course, not without loss. A lot has been written about this house, there is even a book, but even more is written about those who lived in it.

From one listing of their names, I want to stand at attention. Molotov and Zhdanov, Khrushchev, Kaganovich, Malenkov and Kosygin, Trotsky and Stalin's relatives, and finally, those same marshals - Budyonny and Voroshilov, Zhukov and Rokossovsky. Painstaking Muscovites counted nineteen commemorative plaques on the house alone, and only on the outer walls. Now, maybe more, who knows.

It so happened that immediately after the revolution, when the government moved from Petrograd, the house was finally cleared of artists from the Bolshoi and musicians of the conservatory, whom A.D. Sheremetyev took care of, it became the fifth House of Soviets in a row. After the "National", "Metropol", the Theological Seminary on Bozhedomka and the already mentioned "Peterhof".

All apartments in the House of Soviets were equipped with water supply and sewerage, electricity and heating on heaters. But there were no elevators. In the 80s, walking from Voentorg or Leninka, I saw more than once how dozens of black Volgas and even ZILs with Chaikas lined up along Granovsky Street. Not everyone left here for Spiridonovka, Kutuzovsky Prospekt or Rublyovka.

During the war, a bomb shelter was built in the basement of one of the entrances, which, according to legend, was connected to the Kremlin cellars. But this did not cancel the evacuation of residents, followed by a by no means universal return.

There is nothing to compare with house number three on Granovsky Street, although the seemingly two-story mansion that closes it, usually called the Talyzin estate, is recorded in the architectural heritage. But, rather, it is a headache for a true connoisseur of architecture and the capital itself. Only a specialist will see the traces of the estate here, and all this is the result of countless and almost continuous repairs, reconstructions and restorations.

It remains only to note that the name of Granovsky was taken away from the lane, perhaps in vain. Timofei Nikolayevich was, after all, a professor at Moscow University, and in his time not one of the faculties had traveled far - to Leninsky, now Sparrow Hills - had yet to leave.

    Good morning!
Many thanks to the author for this amazing * Moscow-lane cycle *. What about renaming? I agree with the author * Perhaps in vain ... * If we return to historical memory, the historical name suggests itself - Nikitsky. Most likely * undercurrents * of our authorities are to blame .Thank you!

I would like to add photos of that Moscow. Not ceremonially licked, but ordinary. Where ordinary residents lived in the city center.

now Sparrow Hills - has not yet left

                        15 facts about Petersburgers

                        1. If you buy a train ticket and tell your St. Petersburg friend about it, he will be sincerely surprised if you did not take a ticket to St. Petersburg.

                        2. Most Petersburgers are sure that there is nothing north of St. Petersburg, and Murmansk is a mythical country like Atlantis or Lapland.

                        3. Most Petersburgers are sure that there are no other museums in Russia except for St. Petersburg.

                        4. There are only two roads for St. Petersburg residents - to Moscow and to Finland - both for work and both direct.

                        5. Every Petersburger is sure that all the people standing in his way to the exit from the subway car will certainly get off at his stop. Therefore, in the Moscow metro, St. Petersburg residents all the time create a crush in the cars - they simply cannot imagine that other people just need another station.

                        6. The word "ring" for Petersburgers is associated with a pawnshop. For St. Petersburg residents who have lived in Moscow for a long time - from the Moscow Ring Road. But even the most advanced St. Petersburg residents who have lived in Moscow for a very long time do not know about the ring metro line, as well as about the Garden, Boulevard and 3rd transport rings.

                        7. Peter is the most beautiful city in the world. Because there are only 3 cities in the world - St. Petersburg, Moscow and Helsinki, and it’s cold in Helsinki and Finns live there, and in Moscow it’s inconvenient to take the metro (after all, St. Petersburg residents don’t know about the ring line).

                        8. Peter is the safest city in the world. Even despite the dark gates and the simultaneous inclusion of green for pedestrians and cars on the turn. Just because it's cold in Helsinki and Finns live there, and in Moscow you can get lost in the subway (after all, St. Petersburg residents don't know about the ring line).

                        9. There is no sun - this is the fruit of a sick imagination of Muscovites - they always want to show off something.

                        10. There are no nights either. And the sky is gray all the time. It's just that Muscovites have hidden complexes.

                        11. There is only one river in the world. You all know what it's called.

                        12. Venice does not exist - this is the prototype of heavenly Peter.

                        13. Most St. Petersburg residents are sure that the 7 wonders of the world are: Nevsky Prospekt, the Gulf of Finland, the Spas, the Alexandria Pillar, the Field of Mars, St. Isaac's Cathedral and drawbridges.

                        14. The Chosen People are not Jews, they are Petersburgers.

                        15. In the beginning God created the gray sky and the Field of Mars. And God populated St. Petersburg residents and told them to be fruitful and multiply and fill St. Petersburg. And the Finns and Muscovites are descended from monkeys.

                        Now on the points:
                        1. Naturally, we have built a separate station for Muscovites.
                        2. Not all. Until now, I am touched when I see a car with the number of the fifty-first region: ours are everywhere!
                        3. According to rumors, the State Historical Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery exist in Moscow ... But this is not accurate.
                        4. "People come to Moscow for work, to St. Petersburg - for love."
                        5. It's just that every Petersburger knows that the distance between stations is really far, and not "3 minutes on foot", respectively, and people standing at the door are perceived as going out, and not just hanging out.
                        6. The word "ring" among St. Petersburg residents is also associated with the ring road, but Muscovites are unaware of the existence of such a road in St. Petersburg. In addition, for Muscovites who are nostalgic about paid parking lots in the city center, similar ones were arranged in St. Petersburg.
                        7. Undeniable! Even Muscovites admit it.
                        8. Alas and ah! The safest city in the world is Barcelona (yes, the people of St. Petersburg know about the existence of other cities besides Moscow and Helsinki!), and we have a "criminal capital".
                        9. In recent years, the summer has been very hot, but we, unlike Moscow, have a sea!
                        10. It can't be dark on a summer night! "It's just that Muscovites have hidden complexes"
                        11. Volga?
                        12. Well, what the heck is such a paradise! We have enough bypass channel.
                        13. 9 wonders of the world. Also Lakhta Center and Zenith Arena.
                        14. St. Petersburg Jews are protesting!
                        15. In the rain we trust!
PS. Unfortunately, St. Petersburg horses still shit on the asphalt in the same way as Moscow ones. But we are already working on this problem...

I was in Polotsk at the beginning of January 2019 (I love this city!), after which I even published an article:

                https://topwar.ru/155163-srazhajtes-hrabrye-polockie-rycari.html

And here is the first photo from it - my Nastya took it from the window of our car at a traffic light, while we were standing, I asked. This is one of the main intersections in the city. Monument to Prince Vseslav Charodey.

And, as someone from the forum rightly said in the comments: "Monument to Vseslav .. and tiles ..." laughing drinks

After all, I haven't walked for a hundred years. And it's unlikely that I will.
The last time was in 1996. Then there in the wardrobe (immediately to the left of the entrance) they sold decommissioned books, and at very low prices. Bought a few then. But very quickly the prices became exorbitant, probably a professional appraiser came. And in my postgraduate years (early 80s) I visited the State Public Scientific and Technical Library and Leninka, and more often in Leninka, since local business trips were not noted there, but they were noted in the State Public Scientific and Technical Library. And in our secure office they just didn’t let me go for the whole day, only with a local business trip.

They also sold it at the TsNShB. Also below, and prices are low. At other times, the eyes widened.

A friend bought books there much more actively.

I've been to GPNTB a couple of times. It's not really my subject though.

Oh!.. I was also at the State Public Scientific and Technical Library, I took the recommended literature for coursework there - it was not in the institute library, I had to go all the way from Zelenograd to the center of Moscow.
          What struck?
The books on the shelves are tattered! Then it kind of pissed me off to some extent. And only now I understand - they, these books, have been read!
In a small library in my village near Moscow, the books are practically new, there are two librarians, there are no visitors. I also rarely go there. I go in and ask: "Do you have such a book?"
There is no such book. I read online.

Probably, old books were more remembered in all libraries. Language. Thoroughness. Even the notes did not upset - you can see how the person read, what he paid attention to.
And even on library stamps it was sometimes possible to trace the history of each book.

And library cards. Looking for one thing. And at the same time you keep an eye on it. Side branches have always been interesting.

Regarding books, I divide my life into three stages:
              1. "Library" (but I used a certain "blat" there and then, the named aunt worked in this system)
              2. Personal paper library (everything was left with the mother of my children)
              3. Epoch fb2 (sorry not to leave marginal notes)

If it's about fiction books, then probably so.

                https://stihi.ru/2016/05/13/3741

                Or not to go.

                Primary class. Apartment. Twilight.
Dumas behind the door. And the hilt from the lid.
Jules Verne and Stevenson. And a black mark sign.
So the book world is like a bright flash.

                Teenager. Age of silver. Sirens
                Escape Odysseus. Sea foam.
                Spring, extraordinary as lilac.
                She comes with warmth.

So brief is the green of young foliage.
                Frost crack-scar experience.
                And satellites of high silence:
Yesenin, Kipling, Count Tolstoy and Goethe.

And, in general, the publication is also important.

And for every period there are books that you turn to.

And the electronic version is often easier to find. And it takes up less space. But it also disappears from memory faster. Alas.

    8. Simultaneous turning on of green for pedestrians and cars on the turn.

    9. There is no sun - this is the fruit of a sick imagination of Muscovites - they always want to show off something.

    8. This moment in St. Petersburg always amazes me - you start to switch to green - and cars continue to drive right in front of you because of the turn!!!
    9. In August 2022, we almost got roasted in the sun in St. Petersburg!!!

      8. It’s just that we began to put the arrows that regulate the turn on traffic lights about 3 years ago, and Muscovites, apparently, are already so accustomed to road lighting special effects that they began to forget the basics of traffic rules.
      9. That's right, Peter becomes a seaside resort.

Roman, normal motorists always let us through, according to the rules. But akhubajons on Yandex taxi are a separate issue. There is a village. Full kishlak. negative (I ask you not to be offended by the word Akhubajon, this is a name from the former fraternal republics, from where crowds of sheep and donkey lovers come to us for permanent residence).
In August 2022, we almost roasted in the sun in St. Petersburg!!!

You were not with us in July 2021! It was really hot there! fellow By the way, my whole July then fell off with covidla, and the Good Doctors diagnosed her with SARS. request City of contrasts! laughing drinks

And Sobyanin? Well, what about Sobyanin? He is ... Yes, I don’t want to spoil the good and calm atmosphere of the discussion of the article with bad words.

    Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided.

But Sobyanin is still trying to preserve the charm of the streets and alleys of the Boulevard Ring, raising the cost of parking for non-residents, increasing the tax on the only housing.
Can't he follow the Mexican path, surrounding the city center with an impregnable fence with machine-gun towers?

Here in the sleeping areas the situation is really awful. In school classes, from 70 to 90% of the staff are almost non-burning in Russian, the children of migrants from Turkestan.
Soon they will grow up, and will be very unhappy with such an oasis in the center of the Capital.

And no golden owls, like in the apartment building on Neopalimovsky Lane, will save the nouveau riche Muscovites, who have ruined our Old Moscow with their remakes (which were approved by corrupt architects).
