The Prime Minister of Portugal announced the imminent shipment of three Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine
In March 2023, Portugal will transfer three tank Leopard 2 made in Germany. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa, whose words are quoted by the newspaper Correio da Manha.
Earlier in Lisbon, the possibility of supplying tanks to Ukraine was discussed for a long time. At the end of January 2023, Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Carvinho claimed that the Leopard tanks would be handed over to Ukraine no earlier than in two to three months. In early February, information appeared that the Portuguese military department was opposed to sending tanks to Ukraine, as it did not consider them suitable for combat operations.
The head of the general staff of the armed forces of Portugal, Admiral António da Silva Ribeiro, stated that at present the country's army has only 37 German-made Leopard 2 tanks. But of this number, more than half of the tanks are out of order and it makes no sense to send them to Ukraine.
As Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa has now noted, specialists are currently engaged in the restoration and maintenance of tanks. When the necessary work is completed, three tanks can be transferred to Ukraine.
Recall that Portugal at one time bought Leopard 2 tanks in the Netherlands, and tanks already decommissioned from the Dutch army were purchased. Currently, all Leopard 2 tanks are part of the tank battalion of the 1st Mechanized Brigade of the Portuguese Army. In addition to the Leopards, the Portuguese ground forces have old American M60 tanks - there are 101 of them. 86 M48A5 tanks, also of American production, are in storage.
