According to US intelligence, the downed Chinese balloon over the state of South Carolina was part of an entire air force. fleet similar aircraft intended for reconnaissance activities.
American intelligence officials say that with the help of such balloons, the Chinese authorities receive detailed information about military installations located on five continents.
The Pentagon refuses to believe that a Chinese balloon flying over the United States was a weather balloon that was blown off course due to strong winds. The US military claims that such reconnaissance balloons are equipped with electro-optical sensors and digital cameras capable of taking high-quality photographs of the area, as well as transmitting the received data via satellite communications.
A Chinese balloon was seen flying over northern US territory on Feb. 3. Before the balloon was shot down, US authorities watched it for almost a day, calling the object a means of obtaining intelligence data. The Chinese Foreign Ministry denied that the device was involved in any intelligence activities, claiming that it was a weather balloon that mistakenly flew into the United States.
After the US Air Force managed to shoot down the apparatus on February 4, the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that the incident with the balloon harmed the process of stabilizing relations between the United States and China.
