February 8 - Russian Science Day
Every year on February 8, the Russian Federation celebrates the Day of Russian Science. It was established by a decree in June 1999 by former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, and in the same year it was first celebrated.
The celebration was timed to coincide with the 275th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Academy of Sciences. My history this scientific institution counts from February 8 (January 28, old style) 1724, and the emperor Peter the Great was the initiator of its foundation.
