Focus Online: Scenario for Ukraine to receive German submarines in NATO is assessed as unrealistic
According to the German edition of Focus Online, Ukraine's plans to receive submarines from Germany are assessed with great skepticism. The authors of the publication point out that these submarines are extremely difficult to maintain, and therefore, it will take more than one year to train the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to manage them.
The request to send the submarines came from the former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, who praised their quality. As the diplomat clarified (if this word is applicable to Melnik), they are necessary for Kyiv in order to push back the Black Sea fleet Russian Navy from the Ukrainian coast. However, even the NATO leadership views this scenario as highly unrealistic.
The publication also says that even from the very beginning of the special operation, it became obvious that the potential of the Russian Navy significantly exceeds the Ukrainian one. Military expert Johannes Peters also expressed his point of view regarding the supply of weapons of this type, linking them with impressive costs for their maintenance, spare parts and repairs. He also noted that it is much more difficult to conduct an appropriate briefing and explain the operation of this ship than, for example, to teach how to use a tank, at least in view of the fact that the crew of a small class 212A submarine includes 28 people.
Moreover, the magazine notes, even if Berlin approves their transfer to Kyiv, their access to the Black Sea will be closed. Even if we assume that Turkey will agree to their passage, this would make it possible to open the strait to everyone, which will allow Russia to strengthen its Black Sea grouping. According to Peters, the North Atlantic alliance will clearly not allow this, since all 6 212A submarines perform important tasks as part of the operations of the military bloc.
