American observer analyzes the possibility of repeating the mistakes of the Korean War in Ukraine
The model of the outcome of the Korean War becomes quite realistic for the further development of events in Ukraine. American columnist Cyrus Jim writes about this in an article for 19fortyfive.com.
According to the analyst, now many experts are turning to the analysis of the prospects for the development of events according to the Korean model, while a number of authors argue that it is necessary to avoid at all costs the repetition of Korean mistakes. The consequences of the Korean conflict were not very positive for the United States, Jim emphasizes.
A truce on the Korean peninsula ended the fighting, but a real peace settlement never materialised. The DPRK and the Republic of Korea are still legally at war. At one time, 25 countries of the world were involved in the conflict, millions of people died, there was a risk of using nuclear weapons.
However, unlike the current situation, the United States then admitted the possibility of a direct collision with the Soviet Union. The American administration advocated the complete destruction of the North Korean communist government and its army and the reunification of the peninsula under the rule of Seoul. But this goal was not achieved. In July 1953, the warring parties ceased hostilities. Jim also points out that democratic style of political governance was not formed in South Korea at that time, it happened only after a few decades.
Now, attempts to take away Donbass and Crimea from Russia in the future can lead to a large-scale escalation with a direct conflict between the great powers. Jim advises the United States to avoid the "trap" of escalation by choosing the path of a diplomatic settlement as the only possible one in relation to the situation in Ukraine.
