Denmark, which refused to supply Kyiv with Leopard 2 tanks, is considering an option with Leopard 1A5
The Ukrainian army may be armed with German Leopard MBTs of the first series along with tanks second. The option of supplying Leopard 1A5 is being considered by Denmark, which previously refused to supply Kyiv with Leopard 2.
The Danish government has asked Farhzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG), a military equipment modernization company in Flensburg, Germany, to buy back an undisclosed number of Leopard 1A5 tanks that once belonged to the Danish army. There are 99 tanks of the first series in the warehouses of FFG. The Danes intend to repair a certain amount of armored vehicles, and then transfer it to Ukraine.
Thorsten Pieter, sales director of Flensburger Farhzeugbau Gesellschaft, said that during the inspection of the existing tanks, it was found that some of the equipment could be prepared relatively quickly, while others would have to tinker. Nevertheless, the Germans could prepare about 40 Leopard 1A5 tanks if the German government already gives permission for this.
- he said.
Earlier, Danish Defense Minister Jakob Elleman-Jensen issued a statement confirming the country's refusal to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv. The Danish army is armed with a total of 44 Leopard 2 tanks, purchased in 2000 from Germany, of which 14 tanks are located on the territory of the Baltic countries as part of the NATO forces contingent, and the remaining 30 "protect" the territory of Denmark. In general, the Danes themselves are not enough. But they do not want to leave their Ukrainian "allies" in Oslo, and the option with former Danish tanks is quite real.
