The Brazilian Navy decided to sink the decommissioned aircraft carrier Sao Paulo drifting in the ocean
A decommissioned Brazilian aircraft carrier that found itself drifting on the high seas is beginning to bear increasing risks for civilian shipping. We are talking about the aircraft carrier "Sao Paulo" with a displacement of about 32 thousand tons. After decommissioning, they tried to tow it to Europe, where they were going to cut it into metal. However, Turkey, which initially announced its readiness to cut, abandoned this idea. As a result, without entering the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic, "Sao Paulo" turned out to be virtually ownerless.
The command of the Brazilian Navy confirmed the information about the drift of the decommissioned aircraft carrier, as well as that it is taking on outboard water.
In the end, the decision was made to flood it. Moreover, they are going to sink the ship in the neutral waters of the Atlantic Ocean, about 350 km from the Brazilian coast. In this place, the depth of the ocean reaches 5 km.
The Brazilian military says that "the sinking of the aircraft carrier does not threaten the ecosystem of the ocean, since the site of the alleged sinking is outside the conservation areas."
This warship, as the Military Review has already reported, from the beginning of the 1960s to the year 2000 was part of the French Navy and was called Foch. Then it was acquired by the Brazilian Navy.
