The Brazilian Navy decided to sink the decommissioned aircraft carrier Sao Paulo drifting in the ocean

A decommissioned Brazilian aircraft carrier that found itself drifting on the high seas is beginning to bear increasing risks for civilian shipping. We are talking about the aircraft carrier "Sao Paulo" with a displacement of about 32 thousand tons. After decommissioning, they tried to tow it to Europe, where they were going to cut it into metal. However, Turkey, which initially announced its readiness to cut, abandoned this idea. As a result, without entering the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic, "Sao Paulo" turned out to be virtually ownerless.

The command of the Brazilian Navy confirmed the information about the drift of the decommissioned aircraft carrier, as well as that it is taking on outboard water.
In the end, the decision was made to flood it. Moreover, they are going to sink the ship in the neutral waters of the Atlantic Ocean, about 350 km from the Brazilian coast. In this place, the depth of the ocean reaches 5 km.

The Brazilian military says that "the sinking of the aircraft carrier does not threaten the ecosystem of the ocean, since the site of the alleged sinking is outside the conservation areas."

This warship, as the Military Review has already reported, from the beginning of the 1960s to the year 2000 was part of the French Navy and was called Foch. Then it was acquired by the Brazilian Navy.

In connection with the situation with Sao Paulo, caustic comments appeared on the network:

Why sink such a valuable cargo? Send it as military aid to Ukraine demanding that Washington build a new one.

Of course, it will not bring any harm to the environment. How can an iron colossus of 32 thousand tons harm the ecosystem? We believe! But then why not flood it off the coast of Brazil - yes, right next to the Copacabana beach ... It's environmentally friendly.

Military experts of the Chinese edition of EastDay ironically write that India was the first to express interest in the possible acquisition of the Sao Paulo aircraft carrier from Brazil. As if China itself did not acquire a decommissioned aircraft carrier.

          - but how can one not comment on these foggy proposals? It's like: they tried to tow the performer, the performer refused to perform and ????.... The tugboat refused to tow and the aircraft carrier itself decided not to enter the Mediterranean Sea (he decided that he was too old for this shit), quietly gnawed the line and faded?! laughing And no obstacles prevented ??? laughing

Its body is filled with asbestos, which is why everyone jumped off the topic of cutting it up. It would be ideal for us to fuss and take over the disposal of the trough, with the help of "Gorshkov", a thousand miles away - and the matter would be settled and the former hegemon would be clearly demonstrated what awaits his organized crime group, that is, AUG!

In fact, compared to the plums from Fukushima - the flooding of an aircraft carrier, even if it is even chock-full of asbestos - tfu and grind. However, to scratch a turnip like that - something in the world goes wrong when they are tinkering, extracting iron from the ground, where its percentages are in ore, okay, tens of percent - at best, and what for they throw out a clean piece of iron of 32 thousand tons

32 tons is a displacement (volume of displaced water), and the empty weight of the ship is not more than 000 tons. Butchering is a chore, it is as expensive, almost like the cost of the resulting metal. Yes, they specialize in this in India (labor is cheap).

Well, you've reported it. Remember why Archimedes ran around naked? The crown was determined, from pure or not from pure gold. So here's a body stuck in the water displaces the mass of the pushed out water to freedom, how much is stuck there. Remember, the law of Archimedes is the balance of forces, like scales - on one cup there is a ship, on the other - displaced water, therefore it does not sink

The displacement of a ship (vessel) is one of the main characteristics of any water vehicle: the total amount of water displaced by the submerged part of the ship (vessel), as the term implies, is measured indirectly using the principle of Archimedes. Somehow like this.
Well, you will not contradict Archimedes. In my 50 years of marine life, I have constantly worked with this law.

Usually, when they say the displacement of a vessel, its maximum displacement is indicated - namely, the displacement of a fully equipped ship (vessel) with a crew, the maximum reserves of fuel, lubricants, drinking water in tanks, cargo. For example, the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" can have a displacement of 40 thousand to 55 thousand tons. Naturally, this piece of iron in light displacement (this is the weight of the ship when it was built at the shipyard) is about 20 thousand tons (maybe less, taking into account the removed equipment, sawn superstructures, etc.), but naturally not 6))) And respectively displaces as much water as it weighs. Your opponent wanted to say that this aircraft carrier definitely does not weigh 32 thousand tons.

            Well, you've reported it.

From what? From 1/3 to 1/2 of the ship's VI just falls on the "iron". The rest is for variable cargo (fuel, oils, water, etc.), machinery and equipment, which are removed from the board before disposal. The remaining "shell" also carries hundreds of tons of insulation on itself ... so asbestos was just that carcinogenic "insulation" that the keepers used at FOSH as a heat-resistant gasket in case of fire. And there are tons of cork (foam) for thermal insulation of the board and other rooms ...
So your opponent is not so far from the truth ... There, 15-20Kt of metal can probably be scraped together ... If you need to be more precise, then you should look at the order of metal for the plant for the construction of Foch.
            IMHO.

Interestingly, in the ports they refuse to accept it because of the harm of asbestos for some country, but it is possible to flood it in the ocean and harm, albeit a little bit, everyone at once. In a global sense, this is, of course, not much for the World Ocean, but the approach itself impresses with its prospects. As the saying goes, "A hen pecks grain by grain, and the whole yard will spoil!" (C). PS As for demonstration tests - not a bad idea, maybe someone will think about it ...

He is right. In your opinion, why is the volume of displaced water not equal to the volume of the ship (surface), but something still rises above the waterline? It's just that the weight (and not the volume) of the water displaced by the ship equaled the total weight of the ship. Of course, for a cargo ship, the displacement is indicated along with the cargo, so when empty they stick out of the water very high, but this does not apply to warships, unless, of course, all the weapons and mechanisms are dug out of them.
