US authorities have declassified documents that mention some of the statements of the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin about Ukraine. It follows from the documents that as early as 1992, Yeltsin understood the potential significance of "square" and called Ukraine the main destabilizing factor.
As the RIA News", during a meeting with his American counterpart George W. Bush, the first president of Russia stressed that 11 million ethnic Russians live in Ukraine, and Leonid Kravchuk, who was then president of Ukraine, is under strong pressure from Ukrainian nationalists.
Nevertheless, Yeltsin assured Bush of Russia's lack of any imperial ambitions, and also promised that he would be attentive to manifestations of concern on the part of governments of other countries.
At a meeting with the US President, Yeltsin also asked if hostile relations remained between the states they led, and received assurances that the confrontation would end. However, Bush and former US Secretary of State James Baker also did not agree to consider Russia as their ally.
Among the documents declassified in the United States is also a transcript of a meeting with former Russian Finance Minister Yegor Gaidar, who stated that, despite the fact that it would take quite a long time to overcome the differences between Russia and Ukraine, the possibility of the Yugoslav scenario in solving this problem is excluded.
