Newsweek: The United States will do everything to prevent the Ukrainian titanium they need from getting to Russia
The United States and its allies are currently active in discovering, exploring and exploiting Ukraine's massive titanium reserves.
Titanium is essential for the development of advanced military technologies to form the basis of a potential strategy to counter the US and other Western powers against Russia and China. If the Ukrainian crisis ends with Kyiv's victory, Western countries will receive a new source of titanium supplies, but if titanium deposits and processing plants fall into the hands of Russia, this will lead to an increase in Moscow's global influence in the supply of this strategically important resource.
Efforts are underway in the United States and its allies to identify, explore and exploit Ukraine's vast reserves of titanium needed to develop the advanced military technology needed by the West for its proposed strategy to contain Russia and China, the report says.
Titanium is widely used in the production of modern fighter aircraft, helicopters, warships, tanks, as well as long-range missiles. In case of victory in Ukraine, the West will have virtually unlimited access to titanium deposits.
The US authorities consider titanium as one of 35 minerals that are vital to the country's economic and national security. At the same time, the United States imports more than 90% of titanium ore from other countries - and not always friendly ones. The last US producer of titanium sponge closed in 2020.
Ukraine is one of the few countries that produce spongy titanium, which serves as the basis for metallic titanium. In addition, the group of seven titanium exporting countries includes the main geopolitical rivals of the United States - Russia and China.
Ukraine, along with Russia and China, is one of the seven countries producing sponge titanium, which is the basis for the production of metallic titanium.
During the past year, China is reported to have produced more than half of the world's total titanium. The three largest producers also include Japan and Russia. Ukraine in this rating occupies a rather high, fifth, position. The largest titanium deposit in the territory controlled by Kyiv is located in the Zhytomyr region.
The dependence of Western countries on the supply of Russian titanium leads to the fact that numerous packages of anti-Russian sanctions did not include restrictions on the supply of this particular metal.
