German Defense Minister called the abolition of conscription into the Bundeswehr erroneous
The decision to abolish compulsory conscription for military service was a big mistake by the then leadership of Germany. This was stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in an interview with the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
As the head of the German military department noted, the abolition of conscription had a negative impact not only on the country's defense capability. It's not even about the current situation, in connection with the conflict in Ukraine, Pistorius stressed.
According to the head of the German military department, Bundeswehr soldiers used to sit at every dining table in a cafe. This meant that there was a connection with the civil society of the country. However, that time is in the past. Recall that universal conscription in Germany was canceled from July 1, 2011.
As Pistorius noted, now the German government has to make the Bundeswehr attractive to young people. Representatives of the younger generation of Germans should become interested in military service on their own, but for this they need motivation.
At the same time, the head of the German Defense Ministry said that he did not want to impose military duty on young Germans. However, it is not so easy to motivate them for contract service. The Bundeswehr has been facing a huge personnel shortage in recent years.
After the start of the Ukrainian conflict, when the country's need for an army increased, the shortage of personnel in the Bundeswehr only worsened: not only were there fewer recruits, but already experienced contractors were in a hurry to retire from military service. At the same time, the German military, when applying for resignation, do not hide the fact that they are doing this because of the events in Ukraine: they say that they entered the service in peacetime and were spared the risks that they may face with further escalation in Eastern Europe. As a result, the number of those leaving before the end of the contract in the Bundeswehr increased five times.
