Turkey launches a program to modernize the Leopard 2A4 tanks in service with the army

Standing in service with the Turkish Ground Forces German Tanks Leopard 2A4 will undergo modernization, the decision to launch the corresponding program has already been made. This was reported by the Turkish edition of Savunma Sanayi ST.

In total, the Turks plan to work on more than 300 German-made tanks. As part of the modernization, the Turkish Leopard 2A4 will be upgraded to the TİYK-LEO 2A4 modification, which provides for the installation of active protection systems, new modern electronic systems, including a fire control system (FCS). The TİYK-LEO 2A4 program was approved by the Turkish Defense Industry Authority (SSB) this month, with Turkish companies Roketsan and Aselsan as subcontractors.

At the first stage, 81 tanks will be modernized, in the future it is planned to bring about 250 more tanks to a new level. The works are designed for a period until 2026, but this is preliminary. The upgraded Leopard 2A4 has already received the name "Leopard with a tower from Altai", in terms of its characteristics it is close to the Leopard 2A4 NG version.

In more detail, as part of the modernization, the tanks will receive modern electronics and optics, the Volkan-III / TAKS FCS. The gun drive stabilization system will be changed from hydraulic to electric. The tank will receive the ASOP Akkor Pulat active protection system, the TLUS laser warning system or its equivalent LIAS.

The tower will be equipped with an Aselsan SARP remotely controlled weapon station with a 12,7 mm machine gun. The Rh 120/L44 gun and the 7,62 mm coaxial machine gun will remain the same. Also, the engine will remain without replacement, the Turks do not yet have their own, and strangers do not sell.
