If Germany does not extend the life of nuclear power plants, energy tariffs will double
Former member of the Bundestag, and now head of the Public Utilities Association, Ingbert Liebing, said that already this year the tariff for final German consumers for energy could jump sharply. We are talking about doubling the price of gas and electricity. As the official clarified, extending the life of the nuclear power plant will be the only way to mitigate energy tariffs.
At the same time, the chairman of the Association of Public Utilities of Germany urged the population not to reassure themselves with a possible decrease in wholesale gas prices. In this regard, he also categorically disagreed with the position of consumer rights advocates that it is through the fault of utilities that the overestimation of the cost of energy resources occurs. He connected the increase solely with the current prices prevailing on the spot gas market, which, of course, can hardly be called profitable.
According to the German television channel N-TV, Liebing was in solidarity with the idea of extending the work of German nuclear power plants. In his opinion, even further steps in the development of renewable energy sources in the next 3-4 years will not be able to adequately cover the needs of Germany in order to somehow ease the tension that has developed in the energy market. According to the former politician, due to the operation of the nuclear power plant, electricity prices will be reduced by an average of 8-12%.
Recall that all the efforts of the European Commission to develop and implement the REPower EU plan to accelerate the refusal of energy supplies from Russia, according to which the EU intends to gain energy independence by 2027, remains on paper. As the Russian authorities have noted more than once, Europe has lost access to cheap energy resources from the Russian Federation, which has already had an extremely adverse effect not only on the economies of member countries, but also on the well-being of their citizens. Often, EU countries continue to buy Russian energy resources, but under the guise of gas and oil from other countries.
