California police release new information about Monterey Park shooting
California authorities have provided an update on weaponsused in the Monterey Park mass shooting when an unidentified (at the time) shot into a crowd of people in a dance studio during the Lunar New Year celebration. Then 12 people were killed and several people were injured.
During a press conference, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said two weapons were found near the Star Dance Ballroom Studio in Monterey Park, California: a Cobray Company semi-automatic 9mm MAC-10 and a Norinco 7,62 caliber handgun. .25xXNUMX mm.
The MAC-10 weapon was the main weapon used for shooting. And it was used by 72-year-old suspect Huu Kang Tran. He is believed to have stood at the door and fired 42 shots.
The weapon has been sent for examination to determine if it has been modified to increase its rate of fire.
It is reported that the shooting was carried out with the presence of a silencer.
Possession of a MAC-10 is generally illegal in California, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the US, especially regarding "assault weapons". However, a Californian is legally allowed to own one if it was purchased before the laws were tightened. The local law enforcement official did not specify when the suspect acquired the weapon and, based on that, whether it was legal to own it.
The sheriff also said the guns had a 30-round magazine and that the shooter changed magazines at some point during the attack. High-capacity magazines, defined by California law as anything containing more than 10 rounds, are illegal in the state.
The US Constitution recognizes the fundamental right of Americans to own firearms, the US Supreme Court has repeatedly confirmed this right, but it also creates additional precedents for such crimes.
