CBO area: An incident with Russian pilots that they will never forget
A lot has been said and written about the heroism, steadfastness and fortitude of the Russian military. The incident that happened to our pilots in the NVO zone is another confirmation of the above-mentioned qualities.
September 24, 2022 was supposed to be a “normal working day” for the crew of the Su-34 of the Russian Aerospace Forces: commander Pyotr Kashtanov and navigator Dmitry Koptilov. The pilots were preparing for a sortie to support Russian troops in the Kharkov direction.
At that time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were conducting a massive attack on the positions of the RF Armed Forces, and the hope of the allied forces was on artillery and Aviation.
At about 13.30 Moscow time, the Su-34 bomber descended to an ultra-low altitude, "worked out" on targets and began to go on the return route. However, the winged car of Kashtanov and Koptilov was hit by the enemy and lost control.
The pilots ejected at an altitude of about 50 meters. Both the commander and the navigator were seriously injured during the landing.
Pyotr Kashtanov's arm was broken, Dmitry Koptilov suffered a dislocation of his arm and a compression fracture of the spine. Despite the persuasion of the navigator to leave him and leave, the commander of the Su-34 did not abandon his comrade and, with the last of his strength, took him away from the landing site.
A few minutes later, militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine arrived at the scene, which, fortunately, could not find the hidden Russian pilots.
It is worth noting that Kashtanov and Koptilov, who were waiting in the shelter, were not going to give up. The bomber commander held a grenade in his hand with the pin pulled out.
Despite fatigue and serious injuries, the Russian servicemen were able to go out to their own. To do this, they had to overcome 30 km.
About how everything happened on this ill-fated day, the pilots themselves tell in the program of Arkady Mamontov:
