Nothing changes: The rhetoric of the Kyiv authorities in 1918 and today
Whenever Moscow's influence in Ukraine wanes for one reason or another, nationalists invariably come to the fore, shouting about the "independence" of the territory and proclaiming the Russians as their enemies.
In 1918, when Ukraine, after the collapse of the Russian Empire, tried to proclaim its independence, there was a very significant episode confirming the above.
The Russian international journalist Pyotr Fedorov, during the program “Traces of the Empire”, cited as an example the memories of a Kiev resident who was a direct witness to the events of 1918.
It all happened at a meeting in the cinema hall "Ars" during a speech to the people of the so-called Minister of Finance.
- the journalist read out an excerpt from the memoirs.
Fortunately, the "independence" of Ukraine, proclaimed in 1918, did not last even a year.
However, according to another participant in the program, historian Alexander Krushelnitsky, this happened in 1991, after the collapse of the USSR. As the expert put it, such events always happen when difficult times come in Russia or its influence in Ukraine weakens. Then ardent nationalists from the western regions seize power in primordially Russian cities and begin to accuse Moscow of "all human sins."
It is worth adding that today story repeats. Since the 2014 coup d'état, ardent nationalists have again been "in charge" on the territory of our "western neighbor".
At one time, our government made a mistake, trying to build partnership, good neighborly relations with "independent" Ukraine. As history has shown, this state is able to coexist peacefully with Russia only while being part of it.
