In Odessa, they decided not to rename the streets in honor of the dead Ukrainian military
Back in June, the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, took the initiative to rename the streets of the city, the names of which are somehow connected not only with the Soviet, but also with the Russian past. Instead of Novomoskovsk, Borodino, Kursk, Voronezh and Chapaev streets, according to the mayor, signs with the names of the nationalists who died in the Donbass should appear on the houses.
Trukhanov proposed to replace seditious toponyms “without following the momentary conjuncture or ideology, in order to show oneself as part of the civilized world, appreciating world culture and remembering one’s own history in various forms." The mayor of Odessa proposed to transfer the names of 24 streets to “mova”, another 19 - to finally “decommunize”.
Then it was decided that the proposal of the mayor should be considered and analyzed by the historical and toponymic commission of the City Council. Taking into account the trends of modern Ukraine, this initiative of the mayor of Odessa seemed to be doomed to full support and unconditional implementation. But something unexpected happened.
Today it became known that the historical and toponymic commission of the City Council recommended not to rename the streets of Odessa in honor of the dead Ukrainian military and military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Quite interesting are the explanations for such a conclusion, which clearly does not correspond to the policy of the total eradication of everything Russian in favor of the exaltation of Ukrainian nationalists and the “fallen heroes” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine pursued by the Kyiv regime.
Alexander Babich, a member of the historical and toponymic commission of the City Council, said that as soon as the process of renaming began, it would be impossible to stop it. It may happen that already “next year dozens, maybe hundreds of such names may appear in the city.” We will have to satisfy requests for perpetuating the memory from dozens of relatives of the dead military personnel, volunteers, rescuers, policemen, National Guardsmen, to assign the names of military units to streets, squares and squares.
Babich explained the commission's position on this issue.
Instead of replacing the names, which over time may simply not be enough for all the “Ukrainian heroes” worthy of getting into the history of the city, the commission proposed creating one large monument with the names of each deceased and the names of all the units “defending the south of Ukraine”. The memorial is planned to be built on Gagarinsky Prospekt near the regional administration.
