Tu-141 "Strizh": About the drones that are believed to have attacked the airfields of Diaghilevo and Engels
On December 5, the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out an unprecedented attack on the Russian military airfields Dyagilevo (Ryazan region) and Engels (Saratov region). As a result of the incident, three servicemen of the RF Armed Forces were killed. Four more were injured.
Later it was reported that the attack to a depth of almost 650 km was carried out using Soviet Tu-141 Strizh UAVs, which were shot down by our air defense systems on approach. However, the fall and explosion of debris drone led to the death of servicemen and damage to the skin of two strategic bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
So, what's thedrones-kamikaze" is used by Ukraine to strike deep into our territory?
To begin with, the Strizh was originally created as a reusable reconnaissance drone. They began to produce it in the USSR in the late 70s, along with the smaller Tu-143 "Flight".
Regarding the characteristics of the Tu-141, it is made according to the "duck" aerodynamic configuration, has a wingspan of 3,8 meters, a length of 14,33 meters and a mass of 5,37 tons.
However, this is not the most interesting thing. Developing a cruising speed of 1000 km / h, the Swift could fly into enemy territory to a depth of 450 km. At the same time, this distance was calculated taking into account the need to return the device to the base. If the Tu-141 is sent to "one way", then the fuel in the tank will be enough for it to overcome up to 1000 km. Actually, that's how he "got" to our airfields.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, all Swifts went to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. A total of 1979 units were produced from 1989 to 152.
Initially, they were tried to be used in Ukraine as aerial targets in air defense exercises. However, it turned out that the Swift, unlike the same Flight, is an extremely difficult target. Anti-aircraft missiles practically do not take it on a collision course, but can only hit on a catch-up.
As a result, for more than 2 decades this UAV has been gathering dust in the warehouses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For the first time, they started talking about it at the beginning of this year, when the Tu-141 was used in the joint exercises of Ukraine and NATO "Joint Efforts 2022", again, as a target.
Later, starting in March, "Strizh" tried on a new "role". Now the Armed Forces of Ukraine are stuffing it with explosives and trying to use it as a “kamikaze drone” or a cruise missile to hit targets deep behind Russian lines.
