It was originally created as an armored car for the American military police, and in the early 2000s it was actively purchased by the US Army as a light "ersatz-MRAP" to replace the HMMWV in units participating in the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. In the armored personnel carrier version, the US Army purchased 2058 units of the M1117 Guardian, another 844 armored vehicles in the version of the vehicle of advanced aircraft controllers. Later it turned out that the Americans did not need this armored car, especially in such quantities the vehicles were sent for storage.

In the early 2020s, the United States began distributing these armored vehicles, signing contracts for the supply of 145 armored personnel carriers to Colombia, 55 to Kosovo and 1200 M1117 to Greece. Now the turn has come to Ukraine.
