For a long time, the Iranian defense industry has paid great attention to the direction of unmanned aerial vehicles. Similar complexes of different classes are being developed, incl. disposable drums Drones-kamikaze. One of the most interesting samples of this kind is the Arash-2 UAV, suitable for use on different platforms and showing outstanding performance.

On a ready basis

No later than 2012-13 Iranian industry has begun production of the Kian-1 unmanned target. An aircraft-type UAV with a spindle-shaped fuselage, a delta wing and a jet engine was intended for training calculations of radars and anti-aircraft systems. Later, its improved version "Kian-2" was created. Since their inception, both drones have been actively used in various exercises.

Possible ways to upgrade the Kian series UAVs were mentioned. So, to improve some characteristics, it was possible to replace the jet engine with a piston one. In addition, the target could become a strike drone - for this it was proposed to put a warhead on it. As it became known later, all these ideas were worked out, which eventually led to the emergence of new projects.

In 2019, it became known about the appearance of a new Arash UAV, designed to strike at distant enemy targets. Later there were reports about the product "Arash-2". As far as is known, both variants of the strike complex entered service with the Iranian army and were repeatedly used as part of the exercises.

Not so long ago, in September, after the next exercise, a demonstration of modern weapons took place. At this exhibition, new versions of the Arash were shown with full-fledged homing heads capable of finding and tracking a target. It is likely that by the time of the first open demonstration, UAVs with GOS entered service and went into production. Soon they may be shown in action.

UAVs in service

Attack unmanned systems of the Arash series are currently available only to the Iranian armed forces. They are operated together with other UAVs of different classes and types, but at the same time they occupy a specific niche. The product "Arash" is used as a long-range high-precision weapons for different platforms - in fact, land and sea-based cruise missiles.

For the ground forces, several variants of the Arash complex based on a cargo chassis have been developed. The vehicle carries launch guides or transport-launch containers of large dimensions. It is possible to place several drones on one chassis.

Arash complexes are now also available from the naval forces. So, in the middle of last summer, the Iranian fleet demonstrated the use of various types of UAVs from a landing ship and an auxiliary vessel. Drones of various types were used, incl. one of the versions of "Arash". Perhaps the idea of deploying UAVs on ships will be developed, and new carriers of such equipment will appear in the Iranian Navy.

Over the past few weeks, rumors have been circulating about the possible delivery of Iranian kamikaze drones to the Russian army. Various media outlets and sources report that Moscow may have secretly bought large quantities of Arash-2 products from Tehran for use in Ukraine. However, such information has not yet received any confirmation. There are no official statements in this regard; evidence in the form of debris and destroyed targets also did not appear.

Technical features

"Arash-2" is a medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicle or projectile capable of flying to a specified target and hitting it with a direct hit. The basic version of such a UAV is designed to hit stationary targets with known coordinates, while the upgraded products will also be able to attack moving objects in a given area.

The drone is built according to the "tailless" scheme. It has a streamlined fuselage with a large elongation. In its central part, a mid-positioned triangular wing is attached. The tail unit includes only the keel. The total length of the product is approx. 4,5 m, wingspan - no more than 3,5-4 m. The weight characteristics of the device are unknown.

In the tail section of the fuselage, openly and without a fairing, an air-cooled piston engine with a pusher propeller is installed. A solid-propellant starting engine is suspended under the fuselage, which is reset after running out of fuel.

The piston engine limits the maximum speed, but is economical and allows you to increase the duration and range of the flight. The speed characteristics of the Arash-2 are unknown. The design of the airframe indicates the possibility of obtaining high subsonic speeds. During the exercises, a range of about 1400 km was shown. According to various estimates, the maximum value of this parameter can reach 2 thousand km.

"Arash-2" of the basic version is equipped with an autopilot, as well as satellite and inertial navigation systems. With the help of such devices, the UAV is able to reach the designated target with the given coordinates. Whether it is possible to enter the optimal route, correct the flight task after launch or reassign targets is unknown.

Recently, modernized drones with full-fledged seekers were shown. New head fairings indicate the use of infrared or optical means of searching and tracking the target. It should be noted that such a modification of the UAV can be considered a full-fledged loitering ammunition. She is able not only to move towards her target, but to remain in a given area and look for or wait for her, and then strike.

The UAV is equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. Its mass can be estimated in tens of kilograms. It allows you to hit various buildings, incl. protected, as well as equipment and manpower in open areas or in shelters.

It is curious that Arash-2 is used with different types of launchers. So, on land platforms, large-sized rectangular TPKs with internal guides are used. There is also a simplified installation - a stand with three points of support for the device. Similar devices are used on cars and trailers to increase the ammunition load, as well as on ships to save space. In all cases, the starting engine provides a confident exit from the installation and initial acceleration.

Clear benefits

As far as is known, the Iranian industry now produces several types of kamikaze drones and loitering ammunition. One of these samples is Arash-2, and it can show certain advantages over other samples of its class.

The main advantage of the Arash complexes should be considered their origin. Two attack drones are made on the basis of an existing target. During this restructuring, it was possible to save key units, such as a glider or control systems. In fact, the entire alteration came down to installing a warhead and reconfiguring control systems. At the same time, it was possible to obtain a certain potential for further modernization - already successfully implemented.

Both the Kian target and the Arash kamikaze drone have sufficiently high flight characteristics to ensure the solution of the assigned tasks. In the first case, flight data make it possible to plausibly simulate the means of an air attack of a mock enemy, and they make it easier for Arash to break through to the target and complete the combat mission.

In the first version, the Arash-2 UAV follows the target solely through navigation systems, incl. independent of external signals. Such a system is distinguished by the accuracy of guidance, as well as high noise immunity. Its complete suppression is virtually impossible. New GOS variants are capable of actively searching for a target and expanding combat capabilities, but may be subject to negative outside influences.

Of great importance is compatibility with different media. In Iran, Arash products are used both on land and at sea. Thanks to this, the complex becomes interspecific, which gives clear operational and combat advantages.

UAVs like Arash are inherently functional analogues of cruise missiles. At the same time, a kamikaze drone is much simpler and cheaper than a full-fledged rocket, and besides, it can be transferred to different platforms without much difficulty. The Iranian army makes full use of such opportunities and receives all their advantages.

Outcome of development

In recent decades, Iran has considered unmanned systems as one of the priority areas, and now you can see the results of this approach. Products of all main classes and types have been developed, produced and put into service, incl. loitering ammunition with different capabilities.

At the moment, the Arash-2 UAV is one of the latest developments in its class. It shows at what level of technology and ideas the Iranian unmanned aircraft industry is, and in addition, it demonstrates interesting solutions aimed at obtaining the desired results. With all this, it is obvious that the development of Iranian kamikaze drones will not stop at Arash-2, and no less interesting samples will appear in the future.

Need for inventions is cunning. We are waiting for the same mass solutions with UAVs from the DPRK. There, the scientific base is stronger than the Iranian one and the military-industrial complex is more cheerful.

lol And do you think that the United States and its allies have a chance to approach the level of the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation in the field of missile and hypersonic weapons?
            In the medium term?
And what about the use of the Chinese element base of the US military-industrial complex? Are you tired of scandals?
Aren't you ashamed of the B-52, which is 70 years old at lunchtime?
And do your cartridges have at least something close to the capabilities of Russian military and object air defense?

And the Iranians are great - they made simple, effective, massive and CHEAP UAVs. But they gained the efficiency demonstrated in Little Russia solely thanks to the Russian navigation unit GLONASS.
And well done Koreans! Yes They bake rockets like pies, improve, test, refine ... and put them on the USA with the device.
It seems to me quite a decent and promising company.
            China is a companion.

Have you seen enough cartoons, hyper-duper has more names than real content. Although they seem to have done something (but with lesser characteristics for a full-fledged hyper it doesn’t pull) due to the multiple rise in price, but the frail economy of the Russian Federation will hardly pull the mass production of hyper-duper missiles.
Do you think that the country (USA) that makes processors, software, cars of various models, trucks, airliners and just small planes, ships, such a country is completely unable to develop hyper-rockets?

The United States produced 35 of the latest generation F-865 aircraft, and the Russian Federation mastered only 3 mock-ups and 2 prototypes of the Su-57, let's be ashamed of this fact.

Yes, he can, he can. The question is WHEN.
Even with the most unlimited funding and the involvement of all available brains, this will require another 7-10 years. Before being put into service and the start of serial deliveries to the troops.
Aeroballistic may appear earlier ... a little earlier.
But by that time we will already have a whole herbarium of missiles of this class. On the approach GZUR air-based with a straight-through and unpaved complexes.

Strange as it may seem, the power of the country is forged in factories for the production of equipment for the national economy, this is mechanical engineering, machine tools and equipment. So the Russian Federation mainly imports road construction equipment. Kamaz is one, and in the states there are 15 firms making trucks. Excavators and bulldozers Sat, which flooded the Russian Federation, is made by a caterpillar. Something is doubtful that the government, which cannot establish the production of trucks and excavators, will be able to establish the production of hyper missiles.

And the Zircons, they also exist, though only one or two frigates are armed with them so far. But the rocket has been tested and accepted for service. Tests continue on its underwater carriers. but the rocket is already there. And the United States has no doubts about this, they have been watching it since 2010 - every test.

But even in the USA, a lot of cars from other countries run on the roads.
But I will not argue about the civilian auto industry. But for the military, we have quite enough available capacities.
There are so many varieties of armored vehicles in the Russian Federation.
Both bulldozers and excavators are produced in the Russian Federation (though not as much as before), and now there will be even more of them.
And the planes began to build their own - civilian ones.
But it was precisely about exclusive types of weapons that others (and the United States) do not have and that it is impossible to fight (intercept).
And the decision to place "Zircons" on ground launchers of the DBK is a correct and interesting decision. For there are few sea carriers and they are unlikely to be able to be off the coast of the United States (I'm talking about surface carriers). But PLA - they can.

And the production of all this stuff is only growing.
In the USSR, there were also not enough cars, and even with heavy trucks, it was not very good before KAMAZ, but with missiles it was always fine. There were and are a lot of missiles.

what about our scientific base and military-industrial complex

It seems that our problem is that if the order is only for 10 items, but at the same time they want to create a company designed for 500 pieces, but then a large company on meager orders will be unprofitable. And at this stage, the undertaking stalls.
You need to proceed from the order, if the Moscow Region needs 10 products, then this is a handicraft level of production and an aircraft modeling circle of students is enough to make 10 UAVs from plywood and electrical tape.
If the MoD is willing to be generous with 1000 drones a year, then a large firm is needed.

oh well done, Persians, they created a small-sized cruise missile, which we have been doing since the days of the middle USSR lol

Only one thing is interesting. Where do the Iranians get the chips for the control systems of their entire family of unmanned vehicles?

In China, controllers are Arduino boards, for example. It's just that if one controller is not enough for everything, you can put several, each is responsible for its own functionality.

Unfortunately, Ryabov once again published an article with incomplete data on the pages of sites! Yes ... there is very little information about "Arash-2 '' ... and yet there is more of it than indicated in Ryabov's article! I'm not going to put articles about this UAV on the VO; but I'll probably have to focus on readers to some interesting features of "Arashi"!
    1. Warhead weight ...! There is no exact information, but at least 100 kg is indicated ... (in the "average": 100-200 kg and even more!); 2. I doubt the optimism of Ryabov, who claims that "Arash-2" can barrage in the air, "waiting for the target"! But, in case the GOS target is not recognized, "Arash-2" can return to the point indicated by the INS, GPS in order to re-recognize the target and attack it ... And this is possible several times ...
    3. A very useful feature is anti-radar! This function was implemented in the "basic" model "Arash-2", when guidance was carried out using INS and (or) GPS (for example, commercial ...). When "completing the task", in the case of "irradiation" of the drone by the radar, the priority target of the drone becomes the radar!

There, in appearance, you can see how fast it flies and how much it can barrage. And that the internal combustion engine is out of place there. There are no ideal things, there are practical ones.

I don’t understand the often expressed claims against our military-industrial complex - they say that Iran made attack UAVs, but ours didn’t. Ours made weapons based on the conditions of the war with a high-tech enemy. Roughly speaking - for the war with NATO. We make cruise missiles capable of breaking through a modern layered air defense / missile defense system. And now, in the conditions of the NWO, simpler things came at the right time. In the absence of normal air defense in Ukraine, Shahid mopeds work great!
We can make these ourselves - of course, but it takes time to deploy production. Therefore, now, at this moment, it is more profitable to buy ready-made ones from Iran.

The fact is that yards of rubles were allocated for the development and manufacture of UAVs in the Russian Federation. But the return is very weak, which testifies to the cuts of kickbacks and the rottenness of the authorities. In fact, the money for the drones was stolen.

Navigation on GLONAS-JEEPIES is the simplest and it is in a modern phone. If there are billions of such pieces of iron in the hands of the population of the Earth, then installing a small part in drones is the business of a simple engineer-specialist in this field.

We are waiting for the same mass solutions with UAVs from the DPRK. There, the scientific base is stronger than the Iranian one and the military-industrial complex is more cheerful.

Iranian UAVs based on North Korean ones. So no need to wait. Attack UAVs in the DPRK were shown in parades and conducted exercises at least 10 years ago.

We finally also came to an understanding of the need for the mass use of drones. I wonder if it makes sense to use cheap "blanks" together with "charged" drones? To divert and open air defense, spending ammunition of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on them?

This "cheap blank", in order to be effective, must have similar characteristics, incl. and in range, and hence in accuracy (otherwise it will be lost), i.e. in fact, the same drone will turn out.

Of course it makes sense. The more potential targets for air defense, the easier it is to overload and overcome it. The theme of a swarm of drones has long been studied by the military of different countries.

I agree, a straight narrow wing of the same area is more effective at subsonic. Most likely, this was done for the sake of compactness and simplicity of design (no need to deploy a long wing).

The price of the homing head should be at the level of a cheap mobile phone. She does not need to call and talk, only navigation and search for targets using cameras and instruments.

It depends on what kind of homing. If it's just by coordinates (an immovable object), this is one thing. If the withdrawal to the target area and capture by thermal radiation or some other (what was captured), this is different. If for video cameras, then this is quite the third. They need a system for recognizing objects, tracking a captured object. Or continuous two-way communication with the operator.

A modern, inexpensive, mobile phone has many more applications (tasks to perform) than a targeting head, and the cost is measured at most in the hundreds of dollars. Of course, in the guidance head, the depth of map processing is somewhat different and specific, but there you don’t have to move along the streets, in traffic, take into account traffic lights and pedestrians, cats, dogs. The kamikaze drone flies and does not use the Office app, it does not need fingerprint scanners, facial recognition systems, etc., ad infinitum. Yes, you need a good camera (Aliexpress is full), a thermal imager is also not a problem, lidar (Koreans are already spraying glasses on glass. Something else specific is probably needed, but all this is unlikely to exceed the cost of a cheap mobile phone if produced in serial volumes and develop the necessary components, including the processor, for the tasks at hand.Developers simply suck the cost of aiming heads out of their fingers, taking advantage of the conjuncture and incompetence of military customers. The camera and processor of any mobile phone today recognize objects, including faces, and process, using artificial intelligence, the focal length What are the problems in replacing databases with the needs of the military is not clear.Navigation is easier, there are maps, there are recognition systems, it remains to be creatively finalized and the issue has been resolved.

Try turning off the Internet and go to the navigator. You will only see your point on a static, previously downloaded map. You will not have any objects in real time. And this means that all this is processed not in the phone, but on the server. And having any super camera you will not see the surroundings in the navigator. This is me to the fact that the functions and tasks of the phone and the GOS are completely different and it makes no sense to compare them. Well, I understand that you do not know that the requirements for military equipment are fundamentally different from the requirements for household equipment.

The guidance head, just like a car moving along the navigator, is controlled by the operator and software in the Internet space. The only difference is that the operator (car driver) is in the car and takes control physically, as needed, while the UAV operator does this remotely, via the Internet (ground or space). When the signal is lost, in both cases (car, UAV) they switch to previously downloaded maps and the car accurately uses the camera to stay in the lane, and the UAV can rely on the compass, timer, pre-set landmarks determined by the camera. Of course, this imposes restrictions, but in both cases,
with no exceptions. There are differences, but not so critical as to speak of cardinal differences and even more high cost. Due to the narrower range of tasks, processor resources are freed up to perform specialized operations inherent in UAVs. Especially if it is a one-time device flying in one direction. With significant needs in UAVs, processors can also be developed specialized. I take into account the special requirements for military equipment and understand perfectly well, but this does not change anything significantly. In any case, I see that navigating on the ground is much more difficult than navigating in flight. On the ground, the route is more difficult, there are more obstacles and unforeseen circumstances. An open manhole, road repairs, as an example.

I remember the first cruise missile in the USSR was a comet, at the base of instant 15, which, by the way, like instant 17 and 19, were riveted and sracha and are in storage, why not a komekaze drone, put a control system and go ahead, cheap and cheerful (you can put a charge of more than a ton ), but unfortunately you won’t earn money on this ....
