In the recent past, the Russian industry has developed new complexes for the protection of automotive and armored vehicles from high-precision weapons based on special ammunition. To date, these products have entered service, and the industry has mastered their mass production. Not so long ago, they reported on the delivery of the first batch of protective ammunition.



New generation tool


A promising protection complex and ammunition for it were developed in the recent past at the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (part of the Kalashnikov concern). The results of this project were first disclosed only in June 2021. Then they talked about the existence of a new complex, described the principle of operation, and also showed the process of firing and firing protective ammunition. It is curious that the designation or name of the complex has not yet been disclosed.

Later, in September, as part of the Army-2021 forum, new news about this development. So, it became known that a complex of optical-electronic countermeasures (KOEP) is being developed, which includes several protective ammunition at once. One of them received the GRAU 3VD35 index. By the fall of 2021, this ammunition had passed all the necessary tests and was adopted by the Russian army. In the near future, the start of mass production and the supply of ready-made defense systems to the army were expected.

Also deliveries abroad were not excluded. As reported, at that time, several foreign states showed interest in the new Russian development.

For more than a year, there were no reports of a new project, and the current status of the work remained unknown. On October 12, 2022, the Kalashnikov Concern announced that TsNIITOCHMASH had fulfilled a contract for the production and supply to the armed forces of a batch of protective aerosol ammunition designed to counter optoelectronic means. It is noted that such products are in mass production.

The message from TSNIITOCHMASH and the Kalashnikov concern was accompanied by a photograph of protective ammunition. The characteristic appearance of this product and the description given suggest that it was a 3VD35 ammunition or another product of the family introduced last year.

Thus, in just a few years, the Russian defense industry has developed a new KOEP and special ammunition for it, conducted the necessary tests and brought it to mass production. Apparently, now the armed forces, together with industry, will be able to begin installing new systems on existing and under construction vehicles of various types.

Ammunition and complex


The new serial product 3VD35 is a protective ammunition for setting aerosol curtains in order to counteract optical, optoelectronic. In terms of design and function, the ammunition is similar to the 902B Tucha grenade. At the same time, due to new components and ideas, it was possible to increase performance, as well as reduce the dimensions of the product.


Explosion of ammunition and scattering of charge fragments

Ammunition 3VD35 is made in a cylindrical case with a diameter of 76 mm. At the bottom there is a thread for fastening in the launcher and an expelling charge for a shot. Inside the body is placed the main pyrotechnic composition with a bursting charge. The total length of the ammunition - 290 mm, weight - 1,8 kg. Together with 3VD35, other types of protective ammunition were developed with different equipment and longer lengths.

For protective ammunition of the new generation, their own launchers have been developed. These are installations of a simple design with one or more barrels for 76-mm ammunition. Trunks are installed with breeding horizontally and a given elevation angle. There are no proper aiming mechanisms, but the device can be placed on the turret of an armored vehicle, which will provide horizontal rotation.

The starting device is part of the protective complex. In addition to it, the KOEP must contain sensors that signal danger, an automatic control unit, a remote control with an indication, etc. The control unit is responsible for firing the ammunition. It is possible to interface the complex with other means of protection.

It is reported that a complex of this composition can be mounted on cars and armored combat vehicles. So, during the tests shown last year, the carrier of the KOEP was a tank of one of the modern models. A complete list of possible carriers has not yet been disclosed.


Finished curtain

The principle of operation of 3VD35, etc. products are quite simple. On command, the expelling charge is ignited, and the ammunition leaves the barrel. At a given distance from the launcher, at a height of several meters above the ground, a bursting charge is triggered. There is a destruction of the hull and crushing of the pyrotechnic composition. Fragments of the latter scatter, light up and leave behind a plume of smoke. A large number of loops forms a dense curtain of the required size.

The aerosol includes particles that interfere in several ranges. Such a curtain is opaque for optical devices, thermal imagers and infrared homing heads. The development organization reports that the new pyrotechnic composition made it possible to increase the density of the curtain by one and a half times.

Perspective protection


The new complex, which includes 3VD35 ammunition and other similar products, is designed to protect armored vehicles and other equipment from a variety of threats expected on the modern battlefield. First of all, it provides protection against anti-tank missile systems of the latest models, incl. widely advertised.

The wide possibilities of the new COEP are provided by blocking several wave bands. A dense white aerosol of a special composition blocks visual observation, and also blocks the operation of thermal imagers. The line of ammunition includes a product that interferes with radar systems. As a result, the carrier vehicle is protected from almost all modern infantry anti-tank systems.


The curtain with the necessary interference has a height of several meters. Thanks to this, the new KOEP provides some protection from modern helicopters with air-to-surface missiles. An attack helicopter will not be able to take the carrier vehicle of the complex for escort and / or attack it with the necessary accuracy.

The Kalashnikov concern and TsNIITOCHMASH note that the new KOEP may not be the only means of protecting a car or armored combat vehicle. So, they can be equipped with electronic warfare stations to suppress radars or radar seekers with active interference.

Complexes in the troops


From the latest news, it follows that the Russian industry has successfully launched the production of new protection systems and ammunition for them, and also began to supply such equipment to the army. Probably, the new KOEP are already being installed on combat vehicles and are being mastered by personnel. In addition, they could be used in a landfill.

It cannot be ruled out that new KOEPs with their carriers will be involved in the current Special Operation. The enemy uses modern reconnaissance equipment and anti-tank systems, which raises special requirements for the protection of our equipment. Under such conditions, the new protection complex and its ammunition could undergo additional testing - and make a certain contribution to the solution of common tasks.
