Washington threatens to legislate military support to Saudi Arabia and UAE over OPEC+ decision
Several U.S. lawmakers have criticized OPEC+'s decision to cut oil production by two million barrels a day, proposing legislation that would withdraw all U.S. troops and missile systems from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the Middle East's two biggest oil exporters.
The bill, introduced on Wednesday by Tom Malinowski, Sean Kasten and Susan Wild, is in direct response to OPEC+'s decision to cut oil production significantly, which market analysts say will push the price of oil above $100 a barrel. Now the barrel is trading in the range of $96-97, and before the OPEC+ decision, it was below the $90 mark.
They also accused Saudi Arabia of siding with Russia to raise prices amid signs of a slowdown in the global economy.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden visited the oil-rich kingdom and met with its crown prince Mohammed bin Salman in an attempt to improve relations between the countries. Relations were strained in the early days of Biden's rule. The US president left Saudi Arabia saying he expected Riyadh to take "further steps" to increase oil supplies.
The visit was heavily criticized by Democrats as well as a number of activists who saw the move as ignoring the kingdom's human rights abuses in an attempt to secure Saudi Arabia's guarantee of cheaper energy. After that, Biden made a statement that, in fact, pushed Riyadh away from the decision imposed by the United States. The President of the United States accused the Crown Prince of the SA in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE deny that the oil decision was politically motivated, with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman saying Riyadh "should act and respond to what is happening to the global economy in the most responsible and prompt manner." .
Senator Bernie Sanders, who has led several legislative proposals to end US support for the Saudi-led coalition's military efforts in Yemen, agreed that Washington needs to respond to OPEC+ and withdraw military aid to Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.
In fact, the United States is once again proving that it is ready to exert political, economic and military pressure on those countries that protect their own interests and are not ready to blindly follow the interests of American hegemony. If this is world democracy, then what are its core values? In dictation?
