Ambushes can be set up even close to the front line, within the range of artillery, because in the short time that the SAM radar operates in an ambush, it is very difficult to direct artillery. And by the time everything is ready, the air defense system can already safely leave the launch area, fortunately, modern air defense systems are very mobile.
Therefore, the "partisans", who are forced to "shine" the radar for a longer time, are at a distance from the front line, so as not to be exposed to artillery or MLRS. And the "ambushes", on the contrary, can be approached, just in case they need to be covered by MANPADS crews. And it's not that difficult.
Since the Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners have information about all our movements (or almost all of them), they absolutely do not need to hang around the places of the main events, in the Donbass. They can just cover the very objects that have not yet been hit. The same bridges and railways in the west of the country.
Of course, our radar stations also look at Ukraine and see about half of the country. But here is the second one, just where the bridges are, Ukrainians feel more relaxed there.
