Plans for almost $ 7 billion: the US army is preoccupied with the fight against climate change
The US military department intends to implement a five-year program to combat climate change worth almost $ 7 billion, more precisely - 6,8 billion. Three-quarters of the budget will go towards making military installations more climate resilient through microgrids and vehicle electrification. The analytical publication Breaking Defense, citing the Pentagon's plan published the day before, spoke about some details of the implementation of the program to fight for the environment.
Improving the energy efficiency of the US Army will occur in three areas of the climate strategy: technical modernization, logistics optimization and personnel training.
- said the US Secretary of the Armed Forces Christine Wormuth.
About $5,2 billion of the planned environmental budget will be spent on electrifying military vehicles and creating local Microgrid power systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful substances. By 2027, it is planned to put into operation 55 local energy systems. The implementation of the program will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% compared to the 2008 baseline by the end of fiscal year 2023 and by 40% by the end of 2027.
By 2027, it is planned to transfer the entire fleet of light vehicles used to service army facilities to electric motors. The share of medium and heavy vehicles using a hybrid engine system should reach 40% this year. Within the framework of the environmental program, measures aimed at improving the energy efficiency of army logistics will be implemented next year.
The Pentagon has pledged a relatively small amount of one million dollars to improve the "climate literacy" of civilian and military personnel. The money will be spent on learning best practices in the field of climate change and the subsequent retraining of the military and civilians.
Thus, the US Armed Forces plan not only to reduce the negative impact on the environment, but also to prepare for participation in operations conducted in difficult climatic conditions.
- said in the environmental plan of the Pentagon.
