Pentagon Sanctions Drone Manufacturers DJI and BGI Genomics for Ties to Chinese Army
Drone manufacturers DJI and BGI Genomics have been blacklisted by the US Department of Defense. The main reason for this decision is the companies' close ties to the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA). The Pentagon believes that the communication of companies with the PLA can pose a significant threat to American interests.
With companies included in the sanctions list, US trade and other business transactions are limited, including investment in their development. Earlier, Washington has already introduced a number of restrictions on trade with Chinese companies.
It is known that the Chinese company DJI Technology Co, headquartered in Shenzhen (Guangdong Province, China) was included in the list. The American authorities believe that it can use business ties with the United States to modernize its own production and thereby strengthen the combat capabilities of the PLA. The Pentagon is trying to prevent this.
The company is known as the world's largest manufacturer drones. Although the bulk of the company's drones are used by civilians and firms for purely civilian purposes, such as entertainment or agriculture, the Pentagon believes the company should be sanctioned.
In addition to DJI, 7 more Chinese companies were included in the sanctions list. The American authorities, in addition to caring about the security of the United States because of their cooperation with the PLA, are also imposing sanctions because of the situation with alleged human rights violations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. It is clear that the discourse about human rights in the XUAR, as well as in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Hong Kong, is used by the US to justify the policy of economic and informational pressure on China while trying to keep the world in a unipolar system.
