The United States suffered an energy defeat in Vienna: OPEC + countries decided to significantly reduce oil production
At the meeting of representatives of the countries included in the OPEC + agreement, which is taking place in Vienna, what the European Union and its overseas partners expected did not happen. Despite the fact that the Western world made efforts to ensure that the OPEC + countries increased oil production, nothing of the kind happened. Moreover, the treaty countries agreed on a decision to significantly reduce the production of "black gold".
At a meeting in the Austrian capital, Saudi Arabia, Russia and many other countries reportedly called for the largest cut in oil production since the spring of 2020. The total volume of reduction should reach the parameters of 2 million barrels per day.
The organization says the reduction will be phased in. At the first stage, the reduction in production will be about 900 thousand barrels per day.
It is noteworthy that the United States tried with all its might to convince the largest oil exporters, including Saudi Arabia, not to reduce the level of oil production. But no American efforts have been successful for them in this regard. In this regard, experts say that the United States in the international energy arena, in a particular case, in Vienna, was defeated, having also suffered reputational damage in many respects (apparently, among countries where it is customary to talk about some sort of US reputation).
The deal is agreed to by the end of 2023.
The representative of Saudi Arabia, commenting on the decision, noted that today the world economy is in a state of turbulence, and therefore it makes no sense for the world economy to increase oil production in order to face its oversupply in the market later. This statement itself already indicates that Riyadh does not identify the world economy with the economy of the "world hegemon".
Against the backdrop of the decision by the OPEC + countries, oil prices went up. A barrel of Brent oil has again overcome the 90-dollar mark and is currently trading at the level of 93-94 dollars.
