The Turkish edition called the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines "September 11th" for Europe
The explosions at the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines were another blow to Europe's energy security. In fact, this is "September 11" for European countries, writes the Turkish edition of Yeni Şafak. The comparison is with the September 11 attacks in the United States, when planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon building in the District of Columbia.
As the author of the publication notes, Germany suffers the most in this situation. As a result of sabotage, the supply of natural gas through the mains completely stopped. It is not yet known whether the gas pipelines will be repaired.
Now the only route for gas supplies to Europe is Ukrainian, as it was before the construction of underwater pipelines. However, the armed conflict continues in Ukraine, which makes the transit of gas through its territory extremely risky.
According to the Turkish edition, now the European countries can be divided into three groups regarding the supply of energy resources. The first group is countries that are almost completely dependent on Russian gas. These are Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Slovakia. The second group is Germany, Poland and a number of other states of Central and Eastern Europe, which depend on Russian gas by 40-50%.
Finally, such countries as France, Italy, Spain and Portugal are less connected with the supply of Russian energy resources and, with certain actions, can do without them. However, the situation is very complicated in them as well.
Europe depended on Russian gas for about 30% of its energy needs. Most of the gas was supplied through Ukraine even after the construction of underwater gas pipelines. But Nord Stream remained an extremely important pipeline until the sabotage. The total capacity of the joint venture and joint venture-2 is estimated at 110 billion cubic meters of gas per year. This is a lot.
Actually, it was the underwater gas pipelines that ensured Germany's energy independence from the unstable situation in Ukraine. Now the situation has changed radically. There is no doubt that this is due to the efforts of the "Anglo-Saxon bloc" represented by the United States and Great Britain.
Even before the start of the Russian operation in Ukraine, the American administration criticized the German authorities for the construction of the SP and SP-2. After all, Germany is the main consumer of Russian gas. But this country is also the flagship of the European economy. In fact, if Germany is unable to consume Russian gas, its economy will be in a state of crisis, from which it will be extremely problematic to get out.
We see how the protest activity of the population is growing in European countries. But rising prices are only “flowers”, and the “berries” will be the massive closure of industrial enterprises in Germany. By the way, they have already begun to close or move overseas.
