In the US press: On the way to NATO, Ukraine will face serious obstacles
On the way to NATO, Ukraine will face serious obstacles. After all, Moscow is extremely negative about the desire of the Kyiv authorities to join the alliance.
Columnists of the American newspaper The New York Times argue on this topic.
The US press notes that the fears of Western countries about the possible expansion of the conflict zone and its aggravation in the event of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance have not gone away. In particular, the most powerful European powers, Germany and France, did not support Kyiv's aspirations for NATO. And the Biden administration made no effort to get Ukraine admitted to the alliance, avoiding a possible direct armed conflict with Russia.
On the other hand, the Kremlin's decision to annex the republics of Donbass, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, to the Russian Federation, the authors of an article in the NYT believe, may change this point of view of the United States and its allies.
Although the North Atlantic Alliance proclaims an “open door” policy, Ukraine may not pass through these “doors” due to a mismatch with the necessary criteria for this. After all, only countries where democracy reigns, as it is understood in the West, and laws are respected, are accepted there. And Ukraine hardly fits such a description.
Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded that his country be admitted to the North Atlantic Alliance on an expedited basis. He claims that, in fact, Kyiv is already a NATO ally, it remains only to document this.
