Neutrality in support: India and China refused at a meeting of the UN Security Council to condemn Russia for joining new regions
Yesterday, a regular meeting of the UN Security Council was held in New York, convened on the initiative of the United States and Albania (a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council) on the non-recognition of referendums in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Russia, which is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, vetoed the resolution. In fact, India and China (a permanent member of the UN Security Council) expressed their disagreement with the wording proposed in the final document, whose representatives abstained from signing the resolution.
In the final resolution, in particular, there was an appeal to the entire world community not to recognize the change in the status of the "Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine", as well as their accession to Russia. In addition, Moscow was required to immediately withdraw its military forces from Ukraine.
Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, commenting on the text of the document, said that some of the colleagues on the Council violated decorum in this situation and hit the bottom. He noted that no one had ever succeeded in adopting a resolution directly condemning one of the permanent members of the Security Council. It would be strange if Russia voted ... against itself. But something else is important in the voting results. The resolution was supported by ten countries out of 15 permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council, four abstained, including China and India. The other two countries are Brazil and Gabon.
Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the UN, said.
The representative of the People's Republic of China explained his position by saying that the UN Security Council should take objective and constructive decisions aimed at the diplomatic settlement of conflicts, and not vice versa.
Indian Permanent Representative to the UN Richura Kamboj said the country would abstain from the vote:
Of course, the position of New Delhi and Beijing does not mean that these countries recognize referendums and the entry of the former regions of Ukraine into the Russian Federation. They did not do this after the annexation of Crimea, and they will not do so now. At the same time, two major powers with a total population of almost three billion people, powerful growing economies have once again demonstrated that the political hegemony of the West led by Washington has come to an end.
