Alasania intends to reduce the number of the Georgian army
"Now we have a staff of more than 30 thousands of military personnel. I already have a plan on how to change this, but first of all I have to present this plan to the future prime minister," Alasania said in an interview to RIA News, noting that he is not going to create an "offensive military force."
According to him, terrorism and extremism are dangerous for Georgia, and the armed forces must respond to these threats "very quickly and mobilely."
"The emphasis on my part will be that we have a very small, but mobile army that can counter these new threats ... We have excellent military personnel with combat experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, so I am sure that Georgia will become an exemplary state, which will have a small, very mobile and efficient army, "said the candidate for the post of defense minister.
Alasania also spoke of the need to increase the transparency of the activities of the Ministry of Defense and strengthen civil and parliamentary control over security agencies.
“The control over the Ministry of Defense will be really democratic. Because over the past eight years there has been virtually no democratic control,” said Alasania.
Alasania, the 38-year-old, was offered to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the Georgian Dream coalition, who won the parliamentary elections for the post of deputy prime minister and minister of defense.
According to the preliminary data of the CEC, the “Georgian Dream” is to receive deputy mandates in the new parliament of the 87 parliamentary seats, the party “United National Movement” of the current President Mikhail Saakashvili - 63. Other political forces that participated in the elections failed to overcome the five percent barrier. Saakashvili acknowledged the defeat of his party, announced the movement of the movement in the opposition and granted the request of the current government for resignation.
Ivanishvili was officially introduced by the president for the post of prime minister of the country.
