Armed Forces of Ukraine transfer German ZSU Gepard to Odessa to fight against Russian kamikaze drones "Geran-2"

The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine decided to strengthen the air defense of Odessa against the background of the massive use by the Russian army drones-kamikaze "Geranium-2". According to Ukrainian resources, Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns transferred by Germany are being transferred to the city, the task of which will be to fight Russian drones.

Recently, military facilities on the territory of Odessa and its environs have been attacked by Russian Geran-2 kamikaze drones, which in Ukraine are called a clone of Iranian drones Shahed 136. Within a few days, quite significant damage was done to the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the help of drones, this was even announced in Kyiv. The air defense of Odessa, considered one of the strongest in Ukraine, could not cope with the drone attack.

According to some military experts, our command specifically chose Odessa, with its rather powerful air defense, for combat testing of the Geran-2 drones. Despite the fact that a number of drones were shot down, they completed their task, and perfectly well. And in Kyiv they decided to urgently strengthen the air defense of Odessa, since this is the only operating port of Ukraine with the remnants of the Ukrainian fleet.

Since everything is bad with anti-aircraft systems in Kyiv, there are no reserves, German ZSU Gepard went to Odessa. According to Ukrainian sources, the complexes are transported on car trailers. How many ZSU sent to Odessa, not reported. By the way, the Armed Forces of Ukraine use Gepard in conjunction with the Osa-AKM air defense system, thereby obtaining a "rocket-gun" complex, which, according to the Ukrainian military, should perform the same functions as the Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system.

Well, practice will show how many air defense systems, missile and cannon, are needed, as well as how effective they are against a swarm of drones, and of course, how effective the swarm itself is. According to reports, ours use 5-6 pieces per target. I wonder how long the cheetahs will last with a high intensity of attacks? Problems were reported with the amount of ammunition for them.

There is one interesting detail there. Analysts of the American edition of The Drive drew attention to how Russian troops began to widely use Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) Shahed-136 and Shahed-131 in Ukraine against the “rear cities” of the country. At the same time, they pointed to the ability of these drones to both attack stationary targets and actively search for enemy radar radiation, writes the Ukrainian military portal Defense Express.

“A function such as active target designation by radiation coming from a radar station is what a passive homing head provides, but the ability of the Iranian defense industry to provide such a function for their UAVs is questionable while the country is under sanctions. But if the statement about the ability of the Shahed to direct radars is true, then this detail is important. Because it means that trying to shoot down the Shahed-136 with an anti-aircraft gun equipped with a radar station is dangerous, ”the publication says. And we are talking not only about long-range anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) S-300 or medium-range Buk-M1 ", which work thanks to radar guidance. We are talking about such weapons as the German Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, which have two radars for each unit at once, Defense Express continues its analysis. “If the authors of The Drive are right, then the use of Gepard or “large” air defense systems . Instead, Ukrainian air defense should rely on man-portable air defense systems or anti-aircraft artillery such as ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns or S-60 guns. Let's not forget about APKWS (American laser guidance system for unguided missiles Hydra 70, which turns them into precision-guided munitions. - Ed.), Which on paper are designed for use on ground targets, but can also be adapted to hit air targets. And, of course, it should be borne in mind that all means give an effect when used in a complex way, ”says Defense Express.

6 pieces fit in one launcher. Apparently, the Russian Armed Forces have no more than three launchers in total, judging by the numbers that sound in the news about the shelling of Ukrainian cities.

If the geraniums start working on the cheetahs, I think the cheetahs will run out quickly.

What kind of swarm can we talk about if Russia has only three hundred of them

Somehow, we should not forget that for more accurate shooting they need to use a radar, since the Geraniums attack at night, but here, well, I really hope that we still have enough X-31s for them in reserve

Radar is like a kind of flashlight.
And there are even rockets that joyfully fly to this "light".
If you match the speed of drones and such missiles, so that they would appear at the same time - Khan to the cats and the rest.

And what about "Cheetahs" with OLS? The radar station of the 1970s of the "Cheetahs" will be able to detect and point at a plastic moped, it will be interesting to see how the cheetahs will eat flowers, I would rather put the "Shilka" if from the technology of those years, the "Shilka" will catch and cut, ugly car

Shilka in the ZSU, unfortunately, was removed from service at the beginning of the XNUMXs.
And most likely they were "utilized" in the sense of being sold ...

And what can Geranium-2 reconnoiter in the city? Let's say the headquarters of the troops is in the building, through the camera you still won't recognize the target there or not.

Which 9M544 and 9M549 gunner? GLONASS is enough for them, but a gunner can be sent, 10 seconds in one place with a pointer shines, runs across and 10 seconds in another, it will be useful

The problem is divided into three parts:
        1. notch launch site
        2. Notch on the radar in general UAV trajectory
        3. The reaction time of the ZSU itself

For effective air defense, AWACS is needed over the Odessa region.

It turns out that the Iranian drone, as primitive as a moped, is capable of solving a number of problems.
We look at which structure should analyze and make a decision on the production of new types of weapons - we find the Military-Industrial Commission under the Government of the Russian Federation.
As usual, the deputy is pulling the work, and this is Borisov Yuri Ivanovich - Since March 2011 - First Deputy Chairman of the Military-Industrial Commission under the Government of the Russian Federation.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, a respected general since 2011 has not seen the prospect of such a cheap and primitive drone. And as we see today, the entire program for the production of military UAVs, for the most part, is beautiful reporting, samples at exhibitions. And in the army there are only a few of them. I suppose that today the UAV production program has failed. And it will be difficult to ask Yu.I. Borisov how he developed this program, now he is the head of Roskosmos, and who will allow the respected general to ask difficult questions.
So gentlemen, we continue to scrape through empty pockets and buy Mavics in China with our own money.
