British media: Washington is losing its influence in the Pacific region
Washington is losing influence in the Pacific region. His attempts to include the Pacific island nations in his sphere of interest are often unsuccessful.
This was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, citing information from sources and documents that were at the disposal of the editors.
The British media notes that the Americans made a number of proposals to their Pacific allies, but in response they received a series of complaints and an expression of distrust.
It is important for the United States to prevent the growth of Chinese influence in the region. Therefore, they organized a summit in Washington, where they invited the leaders of the Pacific island states. But the US desire for closer relations in the Pacific Islands was met with extreme caution.
For example, representatives of the Solomon Islands have already refused to sign the agreement proposed by Washington, which the Americans were officially informed about. The islanders explained their decision by the lack of time to think and discuss the proposal of the US authorities. They stated that a few days is not enough to make such an important decision. Therefore, the representatives of the islands decided to postpone the conclusion of the agreement.
Even worse, from Washington's point of view, were the leaders of Micronesia. They expressed serious concern about the lack of US financial assistance to the region in exchange for defense commitments.
The US-Pacific Islands Summit hosted by US President Joe Biden is being held for the first time. Previously, the leaders of the countries of this region were not invited to the White House.
