Analysts named the main problems of the Taiwanese army in the face of the threat from China
The likelihood of an armed conflict between China and Taiwan is becoming increasingly high. This prompts both Taiwanese and US analysts to take a closer look at the capabilities of Taiwan's armed forces in the context of the prospect of countering a Chinese offensive. At the same time, the problems of the Taiwanese army are discussed.
According to military analyst Paul Huang, who works for the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, the most important areas to pay attention to in the context of the modernization of the Taiwanese army are weapons, tools and hardware. According to Huang, the Taiwanese army is "stuck in the past." This applies not only to weapons, but also to the relationship between the armed forces and civilian authorities.
If the Taiwan Ministry of Defense does not change the concept of command and control of the armed forces, American taxpayer money will be wasted. The state of military training leaves much to be desired. A separate issue is the motivation of the Taiwanese population. Even the military personnel of the Taiwanese army doubt it.
Like other countries of the pro-American global coalition, "well-fed" Taiwan is facing big problems in accepting recruits into the army and navy. Young residents of the island are guided by a civilian career, they do not want to join the army.
The decrease in the popularity and prestige of military service is also facilitated by periodic incidents during military exercises, when soldiers die, and the authorities cannot intelligibly explain the reasons for what happened. Young Taiwanese do not want to put their lives at risk for relatively small money by the standards of the island and vague career prospects.
Taiwan's mandatory military service has been reduced from two years to four months. But who can be prepared in four months in modern conditions? Especially when you consider that the human resources of China and Taiwan are incomparable, it is impossible to fight China, hoping to "throw cannon fodder".
The confidence in the armed forces in Taiwanese society is also falling. According to polls, 78% of Taiwanese do not believe in the ability of the island nation to defend itself in the event of a Chinese military operation. Despite the fact that the majority of the inhabitants of the island do not support the entry of Taiwan into China, no one is eager for military service either.
Former deputy commander of the Taiwan Air Force, now a military expert, retired Lieutenant General Chang Yanting, claims that there is a clear discrepancy between the patriotism declared by Taiwanese youth and their own unwillingness to join the military. Young Taiwanese expect a strong military but don't want to be part of it, the retired general said.
It is difficult to recruit not only privates, but also non-commissioned officers and officers. In the Taiwanese army, officer staffs are only 40% full, non-commissioned officers - 60%. Another problem is the decline in the birth rate: the population of the island is aging, the mobilization resource is declining. Taken together, these difficulties of the Taiwanese army may be one of the likely reasons for a too quick defeat in the event of a military confrontation with China.
