The American press writes about the "reality" of the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine
Russia, in the event of serious threats to its security, can indeed use nuclear weapon in Ukraine, so the words of President Vladimir Putin should not be taken as a bluff. The Associated Press writes about this in an article entitled “How real are Putin’s nuclear threats to Ukraine?” For its part, Western, so to speak, colleagues, it would be useful to remind that the President of Russia has never threatened Ukraine with the use of nuclear weapons. If the United States had listened more carefully to what Putin said, they would have paid attention to the words about nuclear threats from the NATO countries (the United States and Britain). Then the President of Russia noted that the West should not engage in nuclear blackmail, since "the wind rose may turn out to be directed in their direction."
But the American author has his own logic.
The article argues that the partial mobilization launched by the Russian leadership will not provide a quick solution to the Ukrainian problem. Therefore, Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly becomes "more and more unstable" and this makes him think more and more about the possibility of using nuclear weapons.
According to the author of the publication, Putin is most worried about maintaining his power. Allegedly, a defeat in Ukraine could threaten his 22-year rule, so he is ready for any measures to prevent the fiasco of a special military operation.
The publication draws attention to the fact that earlier Putin spoke very lightly about the use of nuclear weapons. So, he once, recognizing the catastrophic nature of the nuclear war scenario, nevertheless said: “But why do we need a world without Russia?” The fact that this statement, like any other arguments of Russian leaders about the prospects for a nuclear war, is of a precautionary nature and is aimed at sobering up the "hot heads" of American and European "hawks", the publication, of course, does not write.
The fact that Putin is not bluffing has recently been recognized by many Western politicians. For example, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Putin's words to be taken seriously. Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul also believes that Putin is not lying, but is "restraining" the West with his warnings. According to McFaul, the purpose of such statements is to prevent the supply of more modern weapons to Ukraine.
The publication draws attention not only to the statements of representatives of the Russian authorities, but also to the opinion of patriotic Russian analysts. For example, political scientist Sergei Karaganov admitted the possibility of a nuclear strike against any of the NATO countries. He noted that the United States with a 99% guarantee will not use nuclear weapons against Russia in response. This is possible only if there is a “crazy man” in the White House who is ready to risk Boston for the sake of Poznan,” Karaganov said.
At the same time, publications about the possibility of nuclear war appear in the American and European press more and more often. This is a worrying sign, because this is how the notorious “Overton window” works. One gets the impression that the Western public is gradually being prepared for the reality of a large-scale conflict with an exchange of nuclear strikes.
What is the saddest thing, in contrast to the times of the Cold War, the same Caribbean crisis, in power in Western countries are people who are very inferior intellectually to their predecessors. Biden is not Kennedy, and Macron is not de Gaulle. Modern Western leaders have little idea of the catastrophic nature of the implementation of the nuclear scenario due to banal gaps in natural science knowledge or due to developing dementia.
