IL-76MD-90A (product 476) is a new word in Russian transport aircraft manufacturing. Despite the fact that the IL-76 has long been known throughout the world, it is the first aircraft of this type assembled on the territory of the Russian Federation. It so happened historically that the 76th in the Soviet period was made at the Tashkent Aviation Production Association named after V.P. Chkalov. But time is inexorable, and here is a new project based on a proven and reliable solution, implemented by Russian aircraft manufacturers in digital technologies. Now the aircraft will be serially built at the Ulyanovsk Aviastar-SP CJSC. This enterprise is a “giant aviation industry ”, and more recently, the heart of the“ Aviation Capital of Russia ”.

The project of creating an IL-76MD-90А aircraft was implemented during 5 years from 2007. Thanks to the efforts of many organizations under the leadership of UAC (United Aircraft Building Corporation). The main contractor for the preparatory work and the launch of Il-76MD-90А aircraft into serial production is JSC UAC - Transport Aircraft, the main developer is JSC Aviation Complex named after S.V. Ilyushin ”, a manufacturer of Aviastar-SP CJSC, which are part of UAC OJSC, as well as co-contractors of the project of Perm Engine Company OJSC, Kotlin-Novator CJSC, Techpribor OJSC, MIEA OJSC, OJSC Hydraulic unit ”, OJSC“ Aviaagregat ”, OJSC“ Elektroprivod ”and other organizations.

Chief project manager Andrei Vladimirovich Yurasov tells: “On July 7, the 2012 of the year was relocated from the assembly shop to the Aviastar-SP JSC flight test station. An integrated team was formed consisting of specialists from OJSC Il, Aviastar CJSC and organizations developing systems and equipment. The brigade consisted of the best specialists of the above-mentioned enterprises, which have extensive experience in testing systems and equipment of airplanes of various modifications of IL-76 aircraft. From that moment, preliminary ground tests began. The work of the integrated brigade was very intensive. Day and night, the development of various systems and equipment with the subsequent prompt elimination of comments by the production of Aviastar-SP CJSC did not cease.

For Aviastar, this aircraft is a fundamentally new product. Therefore, on the production side, he received increased attention. A two-time daily monitoring of the test program, the implementation of improvements and the removal of comments was organized.

The first phase of ground tests was completed in August 2012, and the aircraft was transferred to IL. “But the work of the integrated test team did not stop there. The second stage of the ground preliminary tests began - the stage of aerodrome mining. The stage required great efforts on the part of the specialists of OJSC Il and all divisions of CJSC Aviastar-SP. The key moment of the ground preliminary tests was the first launch of the installed PS-90А-76 engines, ”says A.V. Yurasov.

It must be said that the PS-90А-76 engine is a modern serial engine manufactured by the Perm Engine Company. The PS-90А-76 engine has passed the state tests according to the requirements of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, and also has the Type Certificate of the Aviation Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC AR). This engine meets all modern requirements of ICAO.

The first engine race took place on 13 September 2012 of the year. Starting engines and their work went without comment. The successful launch and race of the engines predetermined the further accelerated execution of work on the preparation for the first flight.

After that, the specialists of JSC "Il" tested all systems and equipment of the aircraft with the engines running.

The General Director - the General Designer of Il OJSC, Viktor Vladimirovich Livanov, was constantly at Aviastar-SP CJSC, exercised leadership in all important and crucial stages of preparing for the first flight, under his leadership the most complex technical and organizational problems arising during preparations for the flight (in the photo V.V. According to A.V. Yurasov, “21 September 2012, the plane went to taxiing and jogging. Jogging was carried out a comprehensive assessment of the braking system, reversing devices and brake flaps, the work of all systems and equipment. " The preparation for the first flight was supervised by the experts of the Methodological Council of Experimental Aviation under the leadership of its Chairman, the Chief of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise LII named after M.N.Gromov, P.N. Vlasov. On the same day, the methodological council approved the take-off of the aircraft.

22 September 2012. The first flight was performed in accordance with the program. Flight duration was 29 minutes.



During the test flights, the operation of all systems and equipment of the aircraft, its engines at various stages of flight, stability and controllability, electronic indication systems were evaluated; a comprehensive assessment of the braking system, reversing devices, brake plates, flight control, radio engineering and radio communication equipment, within the established limits, according to the factory flight testing program.

According to the test crew commander Nikolai Kuimov, it was determined that “all the systems of the aircraft were operating normally, without any remarks.”



But the most pleasant thing is that in parallel with the creation of the first prototype aircraft, Aviastar was preparing for the mass production of this machine. We managed to walk through the shops of the enterprise, and what we saw is impressive. The scale of work is enormous - everything suggests that the mass production of 476-th is already a reality.     The new modification of the Il-76 is a car, no doubt excellent (judging from the characteristics declared by the developer) and necessary, but this is by no means a new word in the domestic and (or) world aircraft industry. IL-76MD-90A (modification is of course necessary and timely) is just another improvement of the "seventy-sixth" machine, at a higher level that meets the present day. Of course, it will extend the overall service life of the Il-76 aircraft (as a type) for some more time, and this is certainly good, but ... This is just an updated "Merry" and nothing more ...
    But with a new word, a machine of a higher level could become the half-forgotten and now abandoned IL-106 - a transporter with a lifting capacity of up to 80 tons. I believe that such a plane is what our BTA needs. Alas, even a new modification of the IL-76 does not reach this level ...

    In the picture of the IL-106 (sorry nowhere to find a better image), since the late 1980s. and remained only at the level of a promising project. Its American counterpart S-17A has been flying successfully for about twenty years, taking on the main burden of air transportation for the US Army. The experience of its operation has proved the extreme efficiency and the need for machines of this class ... There is something to think about however ...
