Tragedy in Izhevsk: death toll rises to 17
The death toll from a shooting at a secondary school in Izhevsk (Udmurtia) has risen to 17 people. Eleven of the total number of dead are children who studied at this educational institution. Another 23 people received injuries of varying severity. This was announced by the administration of the region.
On September 26, an armed criminal broke into school No. 88 in the city of Izhevsk, who staged a mass execution of students and teachers, and then committed suicide. Soon, law enforcement agencies managed to identify him: 34-year-old Artem Kazantsev once studied at this school himself. Yes, and he lived nearby - in a nine-story building, in a parental four-room apartment.
As former classmates of Kazantsev, whom journalists rushed to hastily interrogate, recall, Artyom was a quiet and inconspicuous student during his school years, he did not enter into any conflicts. And after school, the young man lived unnoticed. A neighbor recalls that he always hid his face behind the hood of his jacket, was an unsociable person, did not communicate much with anyone.
At the same time, other details emerged. So, it became known that Kazantsev was registered in a psycho-neurological dispensary. Kazantsev was diagnosed with sluggish schizophrenia back in 2011. The last time Artem visited a psychiatrist, by the way, was just a week before the mass execution. But this did not stop him from preparing for the crime. In order to carry out a mass execution, he had been preparing for more than a year. This is evidenced by the suicide note that Artem Kazantsev kept in his computer.
A search was conducted in Kazantsev's apartment: the police found five mobile phones and a computer. Despite his mental illness, Kazantsev managed to purchase weapon, ammunition. Investigators have yet to find out how he did it. It has already been established that Kazantsev, as the owner of the weapon, was not registered with the licensing and permitting work of the Russian Guard, and could not be, given his diagnosis.
Pistols, from which the criminal fired at children and teachers, he remade from traumatic ones. Where he bought the "injuries" is also a question, since the possession of a traumatic weapon requires appropriate permission. However, there have always been opportunities to acquire such weapons bypassing official channels, and Kazantsev probably took advantage of them.
Now there is a lot of talk about the fact that Kazantsev was a neo-Nazi. After all, at the time of the crime, he was wearing a black T-shirt with a swastika. However, is it possible to talk about some beliefs when it comes to a schizophrenic with an officially confirmed diagnosis? Rather, Kazantsev's interest in Nazi symbols and massacres arose as a result of his unhealthy psyche.
But, in any case, the investigators are now thoroughly studying any information about the political views, lifestyle, activities of Artem Kazantsev. Although he himself is no longer alive, knowledge and understanding of the psychology of such criminals will help prevent other cruel crimes.
Also, security agencies and investigators will check the "Ukrainian trace" - otherwise, in the current political situation. There is no doubt that there will be a discussion of possible measures to strengthen the security of schools and other educational institutions. But there are a lot of questions, including how the security system is organized in general, given that this is far from the first such crime.
