"And with the motto maybe"
Drawing by 9-year-old M. Merkulov (Exhibition of children's drawings about N. P. Rezanov, Krasnoyarsk, 2006)

Today we will talk about another romantic fairy tale, which was created and formed literally before our eyes and is called "Juno and Avos". Let's say right away that the beautiful music of Alexei Rybnikov more than atones for all the stupidity and incongruity of Voznesensky's libretto, and therefore we will not criticize this famous rock opera, but on the contrary, we will treat it with the greatest respect.

A. Rybnikov

Let's just try to figure out how parallel reality differs from real stories.

Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov before traveling to America

The hero of the rock opera and our article was not a count. He was born in a not very rich and noble service noble family - in St. Petersburg on March 28 (April 8), 1764. The first of the Rezanovs in the annals is a certain Dmitry, who was born in 1500. It is curious that his eldest son was named Murat. The hero’s grandfather, Gavrila Rezanov, was sent to Paris by decree of Peter I “to study geometry, fortification and other sciences”, and he lived in the same room with the notorious “Arap” Hannibal.

In 1745, G. Rezanov conducted a population census in Irkutsk (the name of this city will sound more than once in our article). During the Seven Years' War, Major-General G. Rezanov was with General-in-Chief Fermor, in January 1758 he received the rank of Lieutenant General (simultaneously with P. Rumyantsev and Z. Chernyshev). Acted as chief commandant of Koenigsberg. In 1766–1768 was the chief maritime commander of the Baltic port.

N.P. Rezanov’s father, by the time his son was born, had risen to the rank of collegiate adviser - this is the VI rank of the Table of Ranks, corresponding to the ranks of an army colonel and naval captain of the 10st rank. Soon after the birth of his son, he received the post of chairman of the civil chamber of the provincial court in Irkutsk and lived separately from his family for more than XNUMX years.

His wife (and mother of Nikolai) was Alexandra Gavrilovna Okuneva, the daughter of a well-known shipbuilder, chief sarvaier of the fleet and major general.

Nikolai Rezanov studied at home and could boast of knowledge of 5 foreign languages. In 1778, upon reaching the age of 14, he began military service in artillery units, but was soon transferred to the Izmailovsky Life Guards Regiment. During the service of N. Rezanov, in 1787, the Izmailovites accompanied Catherine II during her trip to the Crimea.

But Rezanov's military service somehow did not work out. Having retired with the rank of captain, he served for 5 years in the Pskov Chamber of the Civil Court and, apparently, not without success, because then he was transferred to the St. Petersburg Treasury Chamber. For some time he was the head of the office of the vice-president of the Admiralty College I. G. Chernyshev, in 1791–1793. - the manager of the office of G. R. Derzhavin, who was at that time the cabinet secretary of Catherine II.

In 1794, N. Rezanov was sent to Irkutsk as part of the commission for the inspection of the merchant company of Grigory Ivanovich Shelikhov. On its basis, the United American Company, better known as the Russian-American Company, was later created. Its shareholders included even members of the imperial family. Rezanov became an authorized correspondent of this company with the government. In 1797, he received the position of secretary (and then chief secretary) of the Senate.

The main woman in the life of Nikolai Rezanov

The hero of our article truly loved all his life not the Spaniard Conchita, but the daughter of G. Shelikhov, Anna, whom he met during an inspection trip to Irkutsk.

G. I. Shelikhov in the portrait of an unknown artist. The founder of the first Russian settlements in America, a bay in the Sea of Okhotsk and a city in the Irkutsk region are named after him

At that time, Anna Shelikhova was 15 years old, Rezanov was sixteen years older. Their marriage was concluded in 1795, Rezanov not only received a large dowry, but also became the heir to the entire fortune of Shelekhov, who died six months later. For 8 years of married life, Anna gave birth to two children and died on October 18, 1802 after a second birth.

Interestingly, her daughter Olga also died after giving birth. Later, Rezanov wrote to Foreign Minister Nikolai Rumyantsev that his true love was buried in the necropolis of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg, and the intrigue with Conchita was just his "sacrifice in the name of the Fatherland."

He wrote about the same to M. Buldakov, the husband of Anna Shelekhova's sister:

“From my California report, my friend, do not consider me an anemone ... Contepsia is sweet, like an angel, beautiful, kind in heart, loves me; I ... cry that there is no place for her in my heart.

Rezanov was very upset by the death of his beloved wife and on February 20, 1803 he submitted his resignation. However, Emperor Alexander I did not accept the resignation and appointed him the first Russian envoy to Japan.

As an encouragement and an advance payment for future merits, a month before sailing, Rezanov was awarded the Order of St. Anna, 1st degree, and the title of chamberlain of His Majesty's court. This personnel decision of the emperor, frankly, turned out to be extremely unsuccessful. Rezanov failed his mission, and his participation in Kruzenshtern's round-the-world expedition was filled with scandals, which, however, remained in the shadow of the antics of the notorious cheater and bully F. Tolstoy-American.

Not "Juno" and not "Maybe"

In the rock opera by A. Rybnikov, Rezanov says:

“I will be ready to purchase at my own expense two schooners at the St. Petersburg shipyard and, giving them the names “Juno” and “Avos” respectively ...

In fact, Rezanov did not need to buy anything, and the schooners were the Leander and Thames sloops acquired by the Russian government in England. In Russia, they received the names "Nadezhda" and "Neva". The first ship was commanded by Ivan Kruzenshtern, the second - by Yuri Lisyansky.

Sloop "Hope"

The sloop "Neva" in the drawing of its captain Y. Lisyansky

I. Kruzenshtern on the portrait of F. Veitch

On July 26 (August 7), 1803, at 10 am, these ships left Kronstadt and set off on a circumnavigation.

On this map, the route of the Nadezhda sloop is marked in blue, the Neva sloop is marked in red

The sloop "Nadezhda" was supposed to deliver Ambassador N. Rezanov to Japan. At that time, Thaddeus Bellingshausen served as midshipman on this ship, who in 13 years will lead the first Russian Antarctic expedition.

Unfortunately, fleeing from punishment after another scandal in St. Petersburg, F. Tolstoy also entered the sloop by deceit (according to the documents of his cousin). Tired of his antics, Kruzenshtern simply landed Tolstoy in Kamchatka - and there was not a single person on the ship who would be dissatisfied with this decision of the captain.

Rezanov also, to put it mildly, did not find a common language with the leader of the expedition, with whom he had to share a cabin. During the journey, he quarreled with Kruzenshtern so much that they began to communicate exclusively with the help of notes that the sailors handed over to the warring parties (have you already remembered the Soviet cartoon “Winter in Prostokvashino”?).

The fact is that Alexander I, it is not clear why, appointed Rezanov, who was not a professional sailor and, by his status, could only claim the status of a high-ranking passenger, as the leader of the expedition - on a par with Kruzenshtern. Naturally, neither Kruzenshtern nor his subordinates liked this. In Brazil, naval officers at a meeting assured Kruzenshtern that they were completely subordinate only to his orders.

After that, Rezanov ordered to fence off his place in the cabin and stopped leaving it until his arrival in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, where he accused Kruzenshtern of having rebelled against him by the crew and demanded the execution of the captain of the ship and the leader of the expedition - no more no less. The governor-general of Kamchatka P.I. Koshelev managed to settle this conflict with grief in half.

Nikolai Rezanov in Japan

In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the ships of the expedition split up. The sloop "Neva" went to Alaska, "Nadezhda" - took Rezanov to Nagasaki, to the island of Dejima, where only foreigners arriving in Japan could then be. As a guard of honor, Rezanov took two officers, five soldiers and a drummer from Governor-General Koshelev. They approached Nagasaki on September 26 (October 8), 1804 and remained here until April 6 (18), 1805.

Sloop "Hope" in Nagasaki

All this time, the ship was anchored in the bay, and Rezanov was in the house provided to him on the shore. It was forbidden to leave him, but the Japanese kept the ambassador free of charge, fulfilling all his whims if possible, even providing a temporary “wife” (yujo).

N. Rezanov and his yujo. Japanese drawing brought by Krusenstern's expedition

Finally, an envoy from the emperor arrived, who declared his lack of interest in trade and establishing relations, returned all the gifts and politely asked the ambassador to leave Japan. Rezanov, in response, "spoke insolent things", which finally put an end to the possibility of negotiations in the near future.

Chekhov in his book "Sakhalin Island" describes further events as follows:

“Ambassador Rezanov, authorized to conclude a trade alliance with Japan, also had to acquire the island of Sakhalin, independent of either the Chinese or the Japanese. He behaved extremely tactlessly... Having suffered a complete fiasco, Rezanov wanted to take revenge on the Japanese. He ordered the naval officer Khvostov to scare the Sakhalin Japanese.

Tails "parroted" by destroying the Japanese settlements on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Voznesensky writes about this in the poem "Perhaps":

“To battle, Dovydov and Khvastov!
Have flown away. Report:
Five Eastern Islands
Yours, Emperor!

What fight? And with whom? With unarmed Japanese fishermen?

No garrisons were left on the no-man's islands "liberated from the Japanese", and there were no declarations about their transfer to Russian jurisdiction. In general, this senseless raid by Khvostov had no political significance, and in Japan he is considered a pirate.

Returning to Petropavlovsk, Rezanov learned that he was instructed to inspect Russian settlements in Alaska.

"Juno and Avos"

The Russian colonies in America at that time were frankly in poverty. The main reason was problems in their supply, which was carried out from Okhotsk. By the time the supplies arrived in Novo-Arkhangelsk, a significant part of them had already been spoiled. And, we must pay tribute to Rezanov, he began to act here decisively and quite adequately. From the merchant John Wolfe, he purchased the ship "Juno", which already had a cargo of food. The ship "Avos" was quickly built.

Both of these ships went to California, which then belonged to the Spaniards. The establishment of trade relations with this colony promised to solve many food problems, but Spain was an ally of Napoleonic France, with which Russia was at war. And therefore, the Russian ships in California were not happy.

"Angel of San Francisco"

In March 1806, the Juno and Avos entered St. Francis Bay. Rezanov landed on the shore, where he stayed for 6 weeks. During this time, he managed to become a friend of the governor of Upper California, Jose Arillaga and the commandant of the San Francisco Fort, Jose Dario Arguello, agree on the establishment of trade relations and seduce the commandant's daughter, Donna Maria de la Concepción Marcella Arguello, better known as Conchita. The 15-year-old girl was charming, the ship's doctor Georg Langsdorf wrote that

“such women are found only in Italy or Spain, and even then quite rarely: they were distinguished by liveliness and cheerfulness, their shining eyes inspiring love, flawless teeth, expressive and pleasant features, a slender figure and a thousand other charms, as well as an artless, natural demeanor” .

Conchita

And this is Conchita in the drawing of 13-year-old D. Maslova (Exhibition of children's drawings about N. P. Rezanov, Krasnoyarsk, 2006):

But, as we remember, all his life Rezanov loved only one woman - his wife Anna Shelekhova. For Conchita, he, by his own admission, began to look after "on duty" and considered relations with her as "a sacrifice in the name of the Fatherland." However, it is quite possible that he really had feelings for the young Spaniard. Telling the Minister of Foreign Affairs that he was courting the daughter of the commandant of the Spanish fort for business reasons, he could try to justify himself, since the conversion to Catholicism in those days was practically a criminal offense, and marriage to a Catholic woman was at least a scandal.

42-year-old Rezanov turned the head of 15-year-old Conchita, apparently, with stories about the majestic imperial Petersburg, where

"Snow-white buttresses,
Like horses drink water.

The same Langsdorf writes about this, in particular. Posing as a wealthy Russian aristocrat and "a person close to the emperor," Rezanov promised Conchita a bright future in the Russian capital. And you need to understand what San Francisco and all of California were at that time - a hopeless outskirts, a real hole where losers and losers who did not find a worthy place in their homeland served.

The easiest thing was for a girl to accept Orthodoxy, which would instantly remove all questions. But, as you know, "normal heroes always go around." It was decided to announce the engagement and wait for permission from the pope, which Rezanov promised to bring. And before that, he still had to ask for the consent of Emperor Alexander I. Perhaps Rezanov hoped for a refusal? Conchita agreed to wait for him for 2 years.

The betrothal took place on June 11, 1806, after which Rezanov immediately went to Novo-Arkhangelsk, where he brought 2 pounds of wheat, 156 pounds of barley, 351 pounds of beans. He proposed to the chief ruler of the Russian colonies in America, A. A. Baranov, to create a Russian settlement in Northern California, which was supposed to steadily supply Russian Alaska with food. The idea turned out to be fruitful: the California colony Fort Ross, founded in 560, existed until 1812.

"Adventure Failed"

Having reached Okhotsk, Rezanov realized that he had to either wait for the establishment of a sledge track, or ride on horseback. He chose the second option and fell into the water several times because the ice was too thin. Having caught a cold, he lay in a fever for 2 weeks and, not really recovering, continued on his way. But fatal, apparently, was a fall from a horse, during which he lost consciousness, hitting his head on a stone. Rezanov was hardly taken to Krasnoyarsk, where he died on March 1 (13), 1807. He was buried in the cemetery of the Resurrection Cathedral. In the 60s. XX century, the place of his burial was lost.

Monument to Rezanov in Krasnoyarsk, erected in 2007. And in 2000, a commemorative marble cross was installed, under which the sheriff of the American city of Monterrey dispelled a handful of earth from the grave of Conchita (and took a handful of earth for the reverse manipulation of the house).

Senorita de Arguello learned about the death of her fiancé a year later - from a letter that one of Rezanov's relatives sent to her brother. The letter said that the girl was now free from all obligations and free to do with her life as she pleased.

However, Conchita was compromised by an affair with an elderly foreigner that everyone knew about in sparsely populated Spanish California. She never married, lived with her parents for about 20 years, then went to the monastery of St. Dominic. Conchita died in the city of Monterrey in December 1857, outliving Rezanov by fifty years.

Tombstone of Conchita

New life of Rezanov and Conchita

In 1972, A. Voznesensky wrote a frankly weak poem "Perhaps", in which Rezanov's fate was briefly and chaotically told. The texts of this poem, for the most part, are simply dumbfounded by some deliberate vulgarity. How about the following excerpts:

"Take the ransom to your parents
For wife:
Maxi fur coat with a muskrat edge,
Grandmother ingenue style.

And:

"God, the One Love in three persons,
Resurrect any of marus...
Nicholas and the impudent girl,
I pray to you!

The poem was almost unnoticed by the readers. Everything changed after the rock opera Juno and Avos was staged at the Lenin Komsomol Theater in Moscow (the premiere took place on July 9, 1981), the music was written by Alexei Rybnikov.

The libretto of this work with the poem "Perhaps" had little in common. It was in the libretto that popularly beloved "hits" appeared, for example, the famous romance. In fact, this is the poem "Saga" written in 1977 - abridged and redone. It also contains these now almost forgotten lines:

"Even if we return to earth
we are secondarily, according to Hafiz,
we will, of course, miss you.
I will never see you.
And it turns out to be so minimal
our misunderstanding with you
before future misunderstanding
two living with an inanimate void.

For the rock opera, the pathetic anthem of Russian sailors was actually written - there is only a small fragment in the poem:

"We are few, we are hellishly few,
And the worst thing is that we are apart
But from all the haunts, from all the nightmares
We are returning to Avos.

The libretto still turned out to be somehow “torn” with a lot of semantic gaps, however, the great music of Alexei Rybnikov linked it into a single whole, literally cemented it, making the Lenkom performance a cult one. However, this rock opera was successfully staged by other theaters, some even better.

N. Karachentsov and quite unlike the Spaniard E. Shanina

Numerous testimonies about the "difficulties" experienced by "Lenkom" when staging this performance cause ironic tenderness. The narrators themselves now and then ingenuously refute their words. For example, the Virgin Mary was “disguised” and called “a woman with a child”, but no one was deceived, and a lady from the Moscow Council said bluntly during the discussion:

"The image of the Mother of God was especially successful."

The performance was unanimously recognized as good and patriotic, and the reason for this, of course, was some three consecrated icons.

M. Zakharov states:

“Then I talked with one clergyman, and this person explained to me: it could not have done without the help of some higher powers.”

One would like to ask: what forces did this mysterious "spiritual person" have in mind? Is it Bulgakov's Woland? Because, from the point of view of orthodox Christianity, many moments and texts of this rock opera (like Bulgakov's entire famous novel) are an incredible heresy with a transition to obvious blasphemy. And only the highest (unattainably high) level of A. Rybnikov's music does not allow us to call his brilliant stylizations of Orthodox church hymns parodies (in contrast to the pseudo-Catholic hymns that we hear in the film "Alexander Nevsky"). But the “progressive” Zakharovsky “father” is not at all embarrassed by all this.

And how do you like the statements that they were very afraid in Lenkom to use the “imperial naval St. Andrew's flag” in the performance? For some reason, the creators of the Soviet film “Admiral Ushakov” in 1953 were not afraid of the Tsarist Andreevsky flag at all, and Mark Zakharov in 1981 was already trembling.

However, all this no longer matters. A new beautiful and romantic musical fairy tale has been created, and who are we to criticize it?

It’s not so scary what they decided to show in the musical. It’s more terrible what is distorted in the story that the old people still remember.

Let me disagree with you about old people, but what do they remember? I will remind the criticism of, for example, lieutenant's prose, because the lieutenants saw from their ceiling, and the generals, from theirs. I will give a simple example. the events of almost 9 years ago, of which he was an eyewitness, the clash of Maidan and anti-Maidan in the Mariinsky Park. I almost immediately heard fairy tales from our anti-Maidan side and, of course. with Bandera But with Bandera from the news that it was not attacked but on them, but from ours, what heroes we were. Of these heroes, if not a third, then about a quarter definitely faded, and many were snatched out one by one, another part guarded the type of women, instead of standing there with us, but the cops-conscripts from the BB did the main work. It was they who beat them, the anti-Maidan sought more. But the legends were born and their participants sincerely believe in them.
And on the anniversary of the annexation of the Crimea to Russia, a drunk bullied, told what we had done, well, I asked the question, what did you do, besides trading in camouflage with a bread slicer? And you know, such storytellers are more convincing than more balanced people.

And as a historian, I will say that great things are seen from a distance. The less personal remains, the easier it is to explore, for example, the clashes of the Greeks with the Persians and the Romans with the Gauls will not hook anyone to the living. Now the author has understood the most interesting topic, essentially Eastern, our advancement to the East, and the time has come to get to the bottom of this issue, because historical science cannot do everything at once.

The record, which came out somewhere in 83 or 84, made a strong impression. Literally listened to. Music .. no words, wonderful. However, like many things in Rybnikov, remember his music for "Treasure Island" of the seventy-something year, and other films. Or, for example, "The Star and Death of Joaquin Murietta" ..

The music is strong, even Ken Hensley wanted to stage something similar in London. It did not work out, but his "Romance" echoes ... .

Special thanks to Ken Hensley. The old man did not pull two octaves, but Rybnikov's music did not suffer from this. Yes, and Hensley did a good cover, IMHO.
May his soul rest in peace.

Why confuse warm with soft? Juno and Avos is a beautiful love story. The real Rezanov is completely different. The production does not pretend to be a history textbook. And without a fairy tale, life will be completely dull. And yes, if you put everything completely one on one with historical events, then any film will turn out to be insipid and boring, do you want that?

Namesake, did you read this article? The author speaks directly several times about the unwillingness to criticize this rock opera, calls Rybnikov's music brilliant, and the fairy tale - "beautiful and romantic." Where is the desire to do something "insipid and boring"? A very interesting objective story that does not cancel, but complements the rock opera.

To see somewhere sarcasm in relation to a rock opera, you need to try very hard. I wrote an article to the music of Rybnikov (not from the play, but from the record), which sounded in my head. It sounded without words - just music.

            Good afternoon, Valery. hi

I heard this rock opera and saw it, but I didn’t make an impression, especially since I had read something about the main characters earlier.
But I'm not talking about Zakharov's creation.
Tails "parroted" by destroying the Japanese settlements on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Voznesensky writes about this in the poem "Perhaps":

In one of the long-read books, in my opinion about Captain Golovin, it was noted that on one of the islands, the Japanese were the first to open fire on the boats from the Juno from some antediluvian copper liver, to which Khvostov naturally answered everyone board. So another question: whose gun fired the first shot.

In general, a very interesting couple - Khvostov and Davydov, in my opinion, they deserve a separate article, because Lomonosov wrote about them:
            Columbus Rossky, despising gloomy rock,
Between the ice a new path will be opened to the east,
And our power will reach America ...

Yes, and supposedly their death is shrouded in darkness, I don’t believe that experienced sailors could simply drown in the river, well, I don’t believe that’s all!

But objectively, we would not have pulled, we also bit our elbows on this issue, but this is a large country, there are far fewer people, and even the settlement of the Novorossiysk Territory created difficulties, and it could not have done without attracting foreigners, and quite noticeable ones at that.

In general, this senseless raid by Khvostov had no political significance, and in Japan he is considered a pirate.
That's right. Rezanov himself from Japan screwed up, shitting in the end, and later Admiral Golovnin received an answer, even spent time in a Japanese prison. The well-known liberalist-sixterist A. Voznesensky blinded a hack, and only the composer Rybnikov managed to really make a work out of his trash. Respect to the author, good article.

Among the co-authors of the opera, in my opinion, Mark Zakharov stands in the first row. It was he who forced Voznesensky to write, rewrite and rewrite the text of the libretto again (the original text of the poem really underwent major changes), and Rybnikov to write and rewrite music, because his variations on the theme of Orthodox religious music, with which he came to Zakharov initially (which served the first impetus for the creation of the final work), it is unlikely that anyone would be interested in themselves.
It was Zakharov who exactingly and harshly directed the process of creating a rock opera, forcing the authors to write and rewrite both the text and the music until they began to correspond to his own understanding of the work.

With all due respect to the personality of M.A. Zakharov, he could neither demandingly nor rigidly manage the creation of the modern opera "Juno and Avos" (this is how its creator, composer Alexei Rybnikov, defined the genre of this work), he could not, because the first audition of Yu and A took place on December 10.12, 1980 in the Moscow churches in Fili, and in Lenkom they started staging it six months later, in the spring of 1981. Read A. Rybnikov's autobiographical book "The Elephant Corridor", the first part of which is dedicated to the creation of "Yu and A". I hope you find it interesting. There is also about the libretto, how it was "molded" too.

A very strange article, more like an opus of a party propagandist from the late USSR.
The artistic component in the article about rock opera generally faded into the background, and the emphasis is on historical prehistory, and on the basis of this it is concluded that this is not a great love, but a relationship "for business reasons" (c). Those. and the opera did not have to be written and staged?
"Juno and Avos" was and remains the only world-class Russian rock opera.
Tours of Lenkom in Paris and the USA. Multiple productions abroad. Not to mention the domestic actors who took part in it.
November 27, 2022 the next performance of the opera will take place in the Lensoviet Palace of Culture. What other post-Soviet piece of music has such success?
Rhetorical question. And why this article?

Does the age difference bother you? 15 plus 16 is 31, I understand that you can fuck young girls, although not of that age, because under modern law this is the seduction of minors, but about great love?
Firstly, he is a very mature man already, these are not modern mediocrities that they cannot do without poppies, and even there are actually few of them among 30-year-olds, they are just noticeable. On the other hand, she is like a girl. I understand that I could fall in love, but excuse me, groan and gasp and live together? Of course, everything happens, my friend's wife is 12 years younger, but once again, you do not confuse those 30 years with the current ones.
And as an argument, there's a difference even a year older, even though it's a fictional story, Natasha and Andrei in War and Peace. What ended there? Acquaintance with Anatole Kuragin. This is a very logical outcome, the groom was not here for 2 years, sorry, although morals were stricter, what did she do there? And Reznikov's dad was absent from the family for 10 years, this is not a family.

In the light of such success of Valery among the readership in the field of struggle with works of art, I, tormented by the black envy of a loser and a loser for the talent of a master, will risk trying to stand in his wake and vilely taking advantage of someone else's success, shove readers of my uninteresting, boring and boring exercises.
I would like to say a few words about the feature film "There on unknown paths."
Despite the good performance of such major actors as Tatyana Aksyuta (Vasilisa Afanasievna the Wise), Tatyana Peltzer (Baba Yaga Varvara Yegorovna), Leonid Kharitonov (Tsar Makar), as well as the magnificent performance of Alexander Filippenko, who gave us the reference image of Koshchei the Immortal, it will not be an exaggeration to say that the film creates a completely distorted view of the real story in the audience.
Let me briefly remind readers of its plot. Captured and kept in prison in inhuman conditions, Koshchei the Immortal, thanks to the actions of the clerk Chumichka, is released and seizes power to the Thirtieth Kingdom, but Tsar Makar, having gathered forces allied to him, regains power, as Koshchei's army scatters and captures Koshchei again.
In this plot, the annalistic outline of the events of 1068 that took place in Kyiv is clearly traced. Prince Vseslav of Polotsk, known to us as Vseslav the Enchanter, is recognizable in the image of Koshchei the Immortal, the Kievan prince Izyaslav Yaroslavich can be considered the prototype of Tsar Makar, the active and decisive Baba Yaga with her actions refers us to the image of the Chernigov prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavich, and the image of Vasilisa the Wise is an undoubted tracing paper with image of Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich. In 1068, the rebels of Kiev really freed Vseslav Charodey, who was imprisoned in Kyiv, and elevated him to the Grand Duke's table. Exiled from Kyiv, Izyaslav, united with the brothers Svyatoslav and Vsvolod, managed to regain his great reign only after seven months.
However, the historicity of the film is completely exhausted by this similarity.
First of all, the authors of the film should have explained to the viewer exactly how Koschey was captured. In a real story, the three brothers of Yaroslavich - Izyaslav, Svyatoslav and Vsevolod invited Prince Vseslav to negotiations and, breaking their own oath, treacherously captured him, brought him to Kyiv and imprisoned him. If the authors of the film followed the principles of historical authenticity, the bright images of Tsar Makar, Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Wise, displayed by them throughout the film, would have dimmed significantly. But we, following the historical facts, cannot ignore these essential circumstances.
    Dadee.
The erection of Vseslav Polotsky to the grand prince's table was not due to court intrigues, as shown in the film, but to the uprising of the people of Kiev, dissatisfied with the rule of Prince Izyaslav in general and the crushing defeat of the princely army in the battle with the Polovtsians on the Alta River in particular. These circumstances are not reflected in the film at all, which again distorts historical reality and serves to whitewash the not-so-bright image of Tsar Makar, which was his historical prototype.
In the film, Koschey attracts the Nightingale the Robber, Famously One-Eyed and the Serpent Gorynych to his side. Let's consider these facts from the point of view of historical reliability.
The Nightingale the Robber, as everyone knows, lived on the way between Murom and Kyiv in the forests inhabited by the Vyatichi tribes. However, we do not know any historical facts that would testify to the support of Vseslav by the Vyatichi. Rather, they could support Prince Svyatoslav of Chernigov, in whose possessions their lands were located. In this, the filmmakers also departed from the historical truth.
We know very little about Likha One-Eyed. However, Likh's "one-eyedness" and the obvious negative connotation of his image leads us to think that he means the Scandinavians, whose supreme god Odin, as is known, had one eye. If we operate with this assumption, then Likh in the film means Scandinavian mercenaries who could be in the service of Vseslav. However, even here we come into conflict with historical reality. Traditionally, Scandinavian mercenaries arrived to serve the Russian princes in Novgorod, but at the indicated time Gleb Svyatoslavich, the son of Svyatoslav of Chernigov, was the Novgorod prince, so the Scandinavians, rather, could be in the army opposing Vseslav, that is, famously one-eyed, following the principle of historical authenticity , should have been in the army of Tsar Makar, and not Koshchei.
And, finally, the Serpent Gorynych. Under the image of the Serpent Gorynych, researchers traditionally understand the steppe peoples, in particular, the Polovtsy, who came to Russia with raids and devastated the Russian lands. However, during the period under review, the Polovtsian hordes had only just come into contact with the Russians, their diplomatic relations with the Russian princes had not yet been established, and they could not be involved in princely strife. This will happen later and for the first time the Polovtsian contingents will be attracted by the heirs of the Yaroslavichs to solve internal political problems against the Polotsk principality, which was under the rule of the heirs of Vseslav.
So here, too, the filmmakers went against historical accuracy.
Next, I would like to say a few words about the circumstances of the capture of Koshchei.
In the film, Koschey led his supporters into battle against the coalition of Tsar Makar and his supporters. After the defeat of the Nightingale the Robber and Dashing One-Eyed, Koshchei's army fled, he courageously fought alone against the entire Makar army, inflicting significant losses on him (Makar himself watched the battle from the side), but was captured after a certain Mitya Sidorov took possession of Koshchei's death, hidden, as is known in the egg.
We will not deeply analyze all the background of this plot, the roots of its origin. We only note that in an open, “fair” battle, Koschey was never defeated.
In real history, Vseslav did not try to confront the Yaroslavich brothers in an open field. He simply gathered his squad and people loyal to him and left Kyiv at the approach of the Yaroslavichs, going to his domain possessions in the Polotsk land.
    General conclusion.
If the authors of the film followed the principle of historical authenticity, then the images of Tsar Makar and his allies should have been purely negative, and the plot of the film should have undergone the following changes.
Having captured Koshchei with the help of a vile deceit, he was placed in a dungeon and kept in unbearable conditions. The people of the Thirtieth Kingdom, dissatisfied with the rule of Makar, rebelled and freed Koshchei, entrusting him with the management of the kingdom. Makar gathers under his banner allies - Baba Yaga and Vasilisa, and also attracts the Nightingale the Robber and Likho one-eyed as mercenaries and opposes the people's elected legitimate ruler of the state. The Serpent Gorynych, on his own initiative, is devastating the lands of the Thirtieth Kingdom, which Makar does not prevent. Seeing the huge numerical superiority of the enemy, Koschei gathers his faithful supporters and retires to his possessions, where he begins to prepare for defense. Makar enters the capital of the kingdom and begins cruel repressions against his people.
Nevertheless, I consider the film "There on unknown paths" to be good and I recommend it for viewing.

Mikhail, I was amused by your analysis of the film, but after reading it to the end, I suddenly realized that it was more serious than it seemed. The correlation of Vseslav the Sorcerer of Polotsk with Koshchei the Immortal, and the presentation of Likh One-Eyed as the personification of the Scandinavian mercenaries - these are quite normal full-fledged versions. Did you come up with this yourself? Or read somewhere?

I wrote this text exactly the time that has passed since my previous commentary with short breaks for current affairs - no more than ten minutes. I read somewhere about Koshchei that the Yaroslavl prince Fyodor Rostislavich Cherny could be his prototype, but I can’t take this information seriously. About Vseslav, in my opinion, the comparison suggests itself, but I have never read about it, especially in any serious literature. Famously - pure impromptu, straight from the sheet and also, in my opinion, quite an obvious allusion. smile In fact, I didn’t put a single serious note into this text, it’s just a joke, nothing more. hi

Today we will talk about another romantic fairy tale, which was created and formed literally before our eyes and is called "Juno and Avos"

This romantic fairy tale was created much earlier - in the XNUMXth century, moreover, in the USA, or rather, back then in the USA.
Among the hills close to the sea - a strange-looking fortress,
Here the monastery of the Franciscans keeps the memory of the past.
Their patron suddenly became a godfather to a strange city,
An angel with a miraculous face here with a golden branch shone.
Ancient coats of arms, trophies irretrievably swept away,
The alien flag soars here, flying over the stones of antiquity.
Gaps and scars of the siege, there are many of them on the walls here,
Only for a moment the eyes of the curious will attract.
Only love could weave a wonderful golden thread
In a harsh, simple fabric - that love did not die.
Only that love invariably revives even now
These gloomy walls - listen to her story.

This is the introduction of the famous American poet Bret Hart's poem "Concepción de Argüello", written 100 years before the appearance of the rock opera "Juno and Avos".
And in 1937, the famous American writer wrote the novel Rezánov and Doña Concha.

I wanted to mention this Garth piece,
but the article was already quite large. But, you must admit, this was not our "fairy tale", just as the "Legend of the Arab Astrologer", written by Washington Irving and published in the Alhambra collection in 1832, was not ours. But Pushkin's "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel", written "based on" - ours. Our "fairy tale" about the "holy and great love" of Rezanov and Conchita was created and came to life in 1981. For which its creators (especially Rybnikov) should only be thanked.
But knowing the real story is also useful. Moreover, it is also adventurous, fictional and interesting.

Yes, it is interesting that many works and plots so dear to us sometimes have much deeper roots. Here is another work, probably known to every Russian, only in a different, more literal translation:
The monument was created by me. He is more eternal
Copper, and the pyramids above it are regal.
The corrosive rain will not destroy it,
Neither the cruel Boreas nor the endless
The chain of the coming years, running away into the distance.
No, not all of me will die! The best part is mine
Avoid burial: I will be famous
Until the priest with the silent maiden
Enters the steps into the Capitol Temple.
It will be known to all that is exalted
The son of the country where the swift Aufid roars,
Where the waterless lot of Dawn is Apulia,
Aeolian chant into an Italic chant
Overflow. Be proud of this memorable
You are my merit and, supportive
Melpomene, wash my forehead with laurel.

Okay, let's put it a little differently. A cultural code is a certain defining set of images associated with a certain group of stereotypes in the mind.
            What
their mention to the vast majority of Russians says nothing
            - this is not an indicator that the set of images and stereotypes regarding Baba Yaga is fundamentally different from that. suppose Baba Yegi or Yama-uba, and the indicator of everything is just the ignorance of the vast majority in this matter, nothing more.

Okay, another example: no one needs Pinocchio in Russia at all, he is a stranger. And Pinocchio - "his own on the board." In order for someone else's image to become part of the national culture, someone very talented, even brilliant, must pass it through his mind - like Pushkin's "Golden Cockerel", borrowed from Irving, and then the inedible nectar will turn into honey. Or - A. Tolstoy - alien to Russian Pinocchio. Garth came from Conchita, Rezanov was a foreigner to him. The creators of "Juno and Avos" went from the image of Rezanov. Crossed somewhere. But the stories (or fairy tales / turned out to be similar, but different.

Do you consider Buratino and the Golden Cockerel part of the national culture? That is, in your opinion, the Italian Burattino (namely, he, and not Pinocchio inspired Tostoy) is that element of Russian culture that contributes to the awareness of unity and difference from representatives of other nations (peoples)?

Pinocchio is the hero of jokes, not too decent rhymes and songs, and the characters associated with him, who became the heroes of catchphrases (such as "works hard like Papa Carlo"), are certainly part of the national culture. Like Stirlitz. A funny example: in Hurghada, the guide asks you to get off the bus quickly and for some reason says "zigel-zigel" (apparently, one of the Russian tourists played a joke on him - he said that it was something like "Schnel") - and the whole bus he answers in unison: 'Ai-lulu.' I sat close and saw what the Egyptian's eyes had become at that moment - they widened and climbed onto his forehead, like in a cartoon. This is also part of the national cultural code and self-identification.

Sorry for some harshness of my comments yesterday. The reason? Well, some of your enthusiasm about the "brilliant Russian naval officers." Now about Rudakov. Are you probably aware of that story of the distant 1942 with his participation? "Crushing" of the Northern Fleet. The ship got into a powerful storm, the stern was torn off, naturally, rescue ships were sent to the destroyer in trouble. And when the crew was evacuated, some of the officers / including the captain and his assistant lieutenant commander Rudakov / went on board the rescuer ahead of the sailors remaining on board. This angered the crew and command of the Northern Fleet. The captain and several officers were shot. Rudakova saved the fleet commander Golovko. It's not that simple, is it? hi

Sorry for some harshness of my yesterday's comments.

Aha! Two people rushed at me - you and Anton, pulled your head into your shoulders and - run! wassat )))
Everything is not easy, Sergey Vladimirovich, everything ...
By the way, good morning! )))
As for complex destinies. Just now I read Skomorokhov's article about the fugitives - what annoyance in the comments! Wild! And what is happening in Telegrams! Cursing the fugitives, people thereby subconsciously complain about their own fate, which made them poor, without any special prospects in life, and the fear of future events, perhaps irreversibly tragic, shows through in their cries of "Kill him!"
The Soviet government, as far as possible, at least understood the situation. Here's how with Rudakov.

Yesterday I only looked at an article about rock opera, and today I read the comments. Shocked by the knowledge of Russian history. And I, like a leaf that has fallen from a tree and carried by the wind, is not adapted to wearing native bast shoes. I'm a Western culture person, that's the way it is.
I don't like this rock opera. I like Artemyev's music. It lies on the video of the fights, as if it was written for them. But they don't use it.

And it wasn't in my mind! I just described the situation. The "white bone" of the officers of the Navy of the Republic of Ingushetia became from the middle of the XNUMXth century.

                Yes, I put a smiley
In fact, I ran away then to Telegram. The tragic situation in Krasny Liman extinguished interest in something else, and right now there is an oncoming battle going on - can you imagine? - counter!
I suppose history knows a lot of oncoming battles, and it has always been a tragedy. And pulls to this as if the outcome depends on me.

Good evening. I read the material in the morning, but I could not answer
Full park. : no longer a set of nurses. Another 1,5 were a few people in the registry, and now it was used as a reserve.
2 died, 3 in infection, one pulled out a match - the front (we are all by lot, so as not to be offended). Desperate, she went on maternity leave, her husband left back in May, and now he is calling that he is hiding due to mobilization. Liar.
+ Some spread anti-Ukrainian rumors. The last one: a Ukrainian woman made a child intravenously and injected air to kill her. The doctor, a Ukrainian, hushed up ... I had to transfer a good district sister to the office, and Vera instead of her. She gives worse injections

It is curious that his eldest son was named Murat.

Valery, this is not surprising, for example, Turgenev's ancestor was Turgen, Kutuzov, somehow met the Tatar Kudus, so his surname is also Turkic, and Yusupov just fires directly. Murat or his son could have converted to Orthodoxy, there is a saying, if you dig a Russian, you will find a Tatar under him.

We have a hard time with stories like this. No matter how the opera sounds, the music and performance are separate, and the story is separate.
I do not see anything vulgarizing and belittling the real events. A wonderful romance about the times when the world was unknown and people were brave and independent.

Well, yes, the St. Andrew's flag was really supposed to cause rage. In the film "Cruiser" Varyag "did not call, in other films he did not call, but personally he had to call Zakharov.
The author is right about this. How the bohemian intelligentsia adored building out of themselves persecuted.
