China tested the latest version of the DF-5C ICBM capable of delivering 10 warheads to a range of 15 kilometers
China has conducted another test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile DF-5C with a maximum range of 12-15 thousand kilometers. This is reported by Chinese military blogs on the Chinese social network Weibo.
The rocket was reportedly launched from the Taiyuan Space Center northwest of the city of the same name in Shanxi province. The warheads of the missile, having overcome the prescribed distance, hit targets at a training ground in Western China, presumably in the Takla Makan desert in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The DF-5C is a two-stage multiple-warhead liquid-propellant ICBM with 10 individually targetable pods, each of which can carry a nuclear warhead. The previous version of the DF-5B ICBM carried six to eight warheads. According to information from unofficial sources, the Dongfeng 5 (DF-5) ICBM is launched from a special mine. ICBM length - 32,6 m, diameter - 3,35 m, weight - 183 tons. Range of destruction of targets from 12 to 15 thousand kilometers.
For the first time, tests of the latest version of the DF-5C ICBM were reported in 2017, and the US press wrote about this with reference to American intelligence, which very closely monitors Beijing's developments in this area. After all, a potential adversary, after all. As was then reported, the rocket was also launched from the Taiyuan Space Center in Shanxi province, it delivered 10 inert warheads to a test site in a desert region in western China.
The Chinese spaceport Taiyuan is located at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level near the city of the same name in Kelan County, Xinzhou City in Shanxi Province. The spaceport is used for testing and launching scientific satellites, application satellites and launch vehicles.
